Next Man United manager timeline as talks held with ‘several candidates’ to replace Ruben Amorim

Manchester United are on the lookout to appoint a long-term interim manager until the end of the season, after Ruben Amorim was sacked on Monday

Manchester United are expected to give Darren Fletcher at least two matches as caretaker manager before appointing an interim until the end of the season.

United sacked Ruben Amorim on Monday, bringing an end to his 14-month tenure at Old Trafford. The 40-year-old’s final game at the helm came in Sunday’s 1-1 draw at Leeds.

Former United midfielder Fletcher, who is the current Under 18s coach, will take charge of the team for Wednesday’s trip to Burnley, with Jonny Evans returning to the club to assist him.

According to The Athletic, United are expected to give Fletcher at least two games – the Premier League fixture against Burnley and Sunday’s FA Cup clash at home to Brighton – in the dugout.

It’s added that United are then poised to confirm an interim solution until the end of the 2025/26 campaign before a permanent replacement for Amorim is named and confirmed in the summer.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is thought to be the leading contender to become United’s caretaker manager after holding talks with the club, Manchester Evening News understands. The Norwegian, who has been out of work since leaving Besiktas in August, is an option being considered as a potential longer-term, interim appointment until the end of the season with Ruud van Nistelrooy among the others in the frame.

Solskjaer has been spotted near his house in Cheshire and would be open to stepping up and helping his former club. He spent almost three years in charge as United’s manager before he was sacked in November 2021, winning 91 of his 168 matches and guiding the Reds to a second-place finish in his second full season.

The 52-year-old then spent more than three years out of the managerial game before returning to take charge at Besiktas in January. He ended up helping them to finish fourth in the Turkish Super Lig. However, Solskjaer was axed from his role earlier this season after Besiktas lost in the Conference League play-offs.

Speaking during a Q&A at the Oslo Business Forum in September 2024, Solskjaer said he would answer the call – whenever, wherever – if United approached him to return to the club.

Solskjaer said: “If the family [United] asks, I would say yes every day of the week. It feels wrong to talk about jobs that other people have now, but I would say yes, of course.”
