Former Manchester United defender Steve Bruce appointed Blackpool manager – Man United News And Transfer News

Former Manchester United captain Steve Bruce has returned to management, having been appointed Blackpool’s new boss.

Bruce has been away from the touchline since he was sacked by West Bromwich Albion in 2022.

During this period, the 63-year-old, who has managed the likes of Newcastle United and Sunderland, also attracted surprise interest from the Jamaican national team.

Despite talks with Jamaica over becoming their new head coach, Bruce lost the race to ex-United coach Steve McClaren.

Now, the former United defender, who led the Red Devils’ backline from 1987 to 1996, is set for an adventure in England’s third tier.

Bruce will replace former Liverpool coach Neil Critchley, who was shown the exit door after Blackpool’s disappointing start to the new campaign.

The Seasiders kick-started the new season with back-to-back defeats under Critchley and currently find themselves in the relegation zone after four games.

Reflecting on his decision to return to the touchline, Bruce told the club’s website: “I’m delighted to be back in football and to take charge of this fantastic football club.

“I’d like to thank Simon, Julian and David for giving me this great opportunity. I look forward to meeting all of the staff and players in the coming days as we prepare for what we all hope will be an exciting season at Bloomfield Road.”

Bruce has agreed a two-year deal with Blackpool. He will be joined by his long-term assistant Steve Agnew on the bench.

As far as United are concerned, questions over Erik ten Hag’s future have once again intensified following United’s 3-0 defeat at the hands of Liverpool over the weekend.

Interestingly, the club’s new CEO Omar Berrada and sporting director Dan Ashworth recently highlighted that the decision to extend the Dutchman’s contract at the club was not taken by them.
