Flamengo “make contact” with Anthony Martial – Fabrizio Romano – Man United News And Transfer News

Brazilian side Flamengo have approached Anthony Martial over the potential of signing the former Manchester United striker on a free transfer, Fabrizio Romano reveals.

Martial, 28, left the Red Devils at the end of last season after his contract expired at Old Trafford.

It brought an end to nine years in Manchester following the Frenchman’s blockbuster transfer from AS Monaco in 215.

Martial played 209 times for United, scoring 63 goal in the process. It makes him the 19th highest goal scorer in the club’s history.

The French star’s chequered injury record meant his final few seasons at Old Trafford were underwhelming, however. He was unable to stay consistently fit, despite manager Erik ten Hag’s admiration of his talents.

It was an easy decision for INEOS – the club’s new rulers following Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s ratification as United co-owner in February – to allow Martial’s contract to expire in June. His weekly wage packet had been worth in excess of £250,00, following a contract renewal agreed in 2019.

There has been some interest in Martial this summer as the forward searches for a new club on the free agency market.

Greek side AEK Athens were reported to have offered the 28-year-old their “largest contract” in history to relocate to the Mediterranean, while there was interest in France and Italy as well.

However, as Romano reveals, it’s the Campeonato Brasileiro side who have joined these European sides in the race to sign Martial.

The Italian transfer guru contends Flamengo have “ma[d]e contact” with the striker as one of their “main options to replace Pedro” – Flamengo’s 27-year-old centre-forward who was recently ruled out with an ACL injury.

Tweet: “EXCL: Flamengo make contact with former Man United striker Anthony Martial among main options to replace Pedro. Following Pedro’s ACL injury, Martial has been approached while he’s considering several options for his future.”

Romano confirms the idea that there are “several options” on the table for the Frenchman with Martial “considering” which one to take.

It would constitute quite the coup for the Brazilian side to be able to land a major name from Europe, even if the player’s reputation will likely prove more durable than his body.
