Harry Maguire defends Erik ten Hag, says Manchester United players are to blame for poor results – Man United News And Transfer News

Manchester United defender Harry Maguire believes the players must shoulder the blame for their recent poor performances rather than manager Erik ten Hag, who is currently facing significant pressure after a rough start to the season.

United are set to face a red-hot Aston Villa side, who come into this game on the back of a famous 1-0 win against Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League.

Despite securing just three victories from nine matches, Maguire insists that the players need to step up and take responsibility for their form.

He said, “It’s easy to blame the tactics, staff, or teammates, but ultimately, we’re the ones on the pitch, and it’s up to us to deliver. We have to defend and be accountable for our performances.”

United recently suffered another setback, squandering a 3-1 lead to draw 3-3 against FC Porto in the Europa League.

As the pressure mounts on Ten Hag, Maguire remains adamant that a strong result against Aston Villa could be a turning point for the team.

The England defender highlighted last season’s successful 2-1 win at Villa Park, emphasising how it could be a source of confidence for the upcoming clash.

“Villa Park was electric last season, but we went there and got the result we needed. We believe we can do the same this Sunday.”

Maguire also acknowledged that the team hasn’t accumulated enough points but is optimistic about turning things around. “The results haven’t reflected how well we’ve been playing at times. We need to change that, starting with Villa,” he added.

Despite his rallying cry, Maguire has had a turbulent week himself.

He scored a dramatic equaliser against Porto but was left out of the latest England squad by interim coach Lee Carsley. Maguire admitted he was “surprised” by the omission, but Carsley assured him that he remains a key part of England’s plans.

“I was disappointed not to be picked, but I understand the coach’s reasoning. It’s now on me to prove myself and leave no doubt about my place in the team.”
