Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana has won the Premier League’s ‘Save of the Month’ award as the Cameroonian’s fine form this season continues amid a sea of inconsistency from his teammates.
Onana, 28, endured a difficult start to life at Old Trafford following his expensive move from Inter Milan.
The goalkeeper made a number of high-profile errors, most notably in the Champions League, which saw many questioning the decision by the club to replace long-term stalwart David de Gea with Onana.
However, as the year progressed, the Cameroon international was able to largely cut out these mistakes, and he enjoyed a quietly successful second half of the season. And this has continued into the new campaign.
Onana currently leads the Golden Glove race with United having racked up four clean sheets in eight games, despite some abject performances by the Red Devils in these matches.
The 28-year-old also ranks second for ‘Goals Prevented‘ with 3.26 – a reflection of just how bad the situation would at Old Trafford without their only consistent performer this season.
And now Onana’s excellent form has been recognised and rewarded by the Premier League after his brilliant double save against Crystal Palace was voted September’s ‘Save of the Month’.
Tweet: “Andre Onana wins September’s Save of the Month award for his incredible reactions against Crystal Palace!”
United’s goalkeeper produced heroic back-to-back saves to keep a closely-fought match at Selhurst Park level. It would end 0-0, underscoring just how important Onana’s contributions were to United not falling to a disappointing loss.
It was a similar situation a week prior against newly-promoted Southampton. The Saints had begun the match in far better shape than United and were running the Red Devils ragged.
A clumsy tackle by Diogo Dalot then conceded a penalty and the fanbase collectively prepared itself for yet another embarrassing weekend of football. But Onana had a different idea.
The 28-year-old produced a brilliant stop to keep Cameron Archer’s penalty out. The jubilation from Onana’s save then sparked his teammates into life and United ended the first-half 2-0 up, rather than 1-0 down.
It’s a testament to the the goalkeeper’s mental fortitude that he overcame such a difficult beginning in Manchester to firmly establish himself as one of the best in his position in the league. And this latest award is just further confirmation of that.
