Manchester United’s newly appointed head coach, Ruben Amorim, has revealed that his move to Old Trafford was fast-tracked after he was informed it was “now or never.”
Despite expressing his desire to finish the season with his current club, Sporting CP, the 39-year-old manager accepted the Premier League offer when he realized it was his only chance.
Amorim, who will officially join United on 11 November, made his comments following Sporting’s recent 5-1 victory over Estrela da Amadora, a win that keeps the Portuguese club at the top of their league.
The manager disclosed that, upon receiving United’s proposal, he initially requested to remain in Lisbon until the season’s end. Having already communicated his intention to step down at the end of this campaign, he was keen to see it through.
However, Sporting’s management clarified that United had activated a buyout clause, effectively ending his tenure prematurely.
“I wanted to stay until the end of the season. But I was told that Manchester United needed someone immediately. It was now or never.”
Amorim is set to lead United until June 2027, becoming the club’s sixth permanent manager since Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure in 2013.
Known for his tactical ingenuity and for leading Sporting to their first league title in 19 years, Amorim emphasized his commitment to United. “I’ve had other offers,but United was the only move I wanted after Sporting. That environment allows me to do things my way, with the club’s backing.”
Amorim admitted that the decision was challenging, both personally and professionally. “It was harder for me than any Sporting fan,” he explained. “But I knew it was time to step forward.”
Responding to speculation about financial motives, he clarified, “There was another offer previously, which would have paid three times more than what Manchester United is offering. It’s not about the money.”
Despite his commitment to United, Amorim reassured Sporting fans that he would stay focused on their upcoming matches, including crucial fixtures against Manchester City in the Champions League and Braga in the league.
United’s interim manager, Ruud van Nistelrooy, will continue to oversee the team until Amorim’s arrival, managing two league games and one Europa League fixture.
As for his coaching team, Amorim insisted on bringing his long-standing staff with him to Old Trafford, reflecting his preference for continuity. “My team has been with me since my first role at Casa Pia. They’re essential to how I work.”
Amorim’s hiring comes at a turbulent time for United, currently 14th in the league after nine matches. His arrival signals a pivotal moment for the club as they aim to regain their former glory.
