Manchester United target Nuno Mendes is reportedly not close to signing a new deal with Paris Saint-Germain.
The left wingback position at United has become a major issue for Ruben Amorim, something previous manager Erik ten Hag also struggled with.
Tyrell Malacia’s incredibly severe injury that kept him out for well over a year and Luke Shaw’s constant relapses have resulted in Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui both being forced to cover on the left despite their preference of playing on the right.
Amorim’s side have been linked with numerous left back options including Alphonso Davies, Milos Kerkez and Rayan Ait-Nouri in recent weeks.
Nuno Mendes is also thought to be one option the club is keen on but hopes seemed dashed when it was reported he was close to signing a new deal with his current team, Paris Saint-Germain.
Nonetheless, it seems that this transfer still has some life in it yet, according to reports from Germany.
Sky Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg has stated that “Manchester United remain strongly interested in Nuno Mendes as revealed in our show three weeks ago.”
PSG would love to extend the 22 year old’s contract but the reporter states that he has “been told that it is currently not planned for him to sign soon, as there are many top suitors.”
Interestingly, Mendes and United boss Amorim share the same agency, and the Red Devils are aware of Mendes’ situation.
It is suggested that Alphonso Davies still remains a major target but if he decides to stay at Bayern Munich then Mendes and AC Milan’s Theo Hernandez are “currently the two expensive preferred left-back options.”
Mendes played one season under Amorim back in 2020-2021 while they were both at Sporting Lisbon and the marauding full-back would be familiar with his tactical demands in the wingback position.
The 22-year-old is also seen as a balanced player where “his natural ball progression skills and flair could help in exposing defences, while his awareness and concentration provide more security at the back.”
He is currently enjoying a successful season in Paris where he has scored two goals and provided two assists in 15 matches in all competitions.
