Manchester United are going to have to be smart in the summer transfer window as they bid to navigate their difficult financial situation.
United confirmed on Wednesday that they had recorded a total loss of £27million in the final three months of 2024 and need to be careful to ensure they don’t breach Premier League Profit and Sustainability (PSR) rules. It means that Ruben Amorim’s side are expected to have a restricted transfer budget.
Regardless of that, United are going need to be smart in the market to ensure they comply with PSR rules. With this in mind, United could look at signing players who have one year left on their contracts come the summer as they are likely to be available on cut-price deals.
Here, Manchester Evening News take a look at five players United could sign who are out of contract in 2026…
Antoine Griezmann
The 33-year-old has scored goals throughout his entire career, but has never played in the Premier League. Despite his age, he could be a clever pick up by United who need an out-and-out goalscorer.
His contract situation means that he could be available at a reduced price, with transfermarkt currently valuing him at €22 million (£18.2m). He is still a regular with Atletico Madrid, and has scored 15 goals in 35 appearances so far this season, meaning the Spanish side may demand a bigger fee.
Jean-Philippe Mateta
The 27-year-old has been in impressive goalscoring form for Crystal Palace since the arrival of Oliver Glasner as manager. This season he has scored 11 goals in 25 Premier League appearances.
Transfermarket currently value the French international at €20 million (£16.6m). It has, however, been reported that Palace will place a value of £40-50 million on the striker in the summer window, despite him being out of contract a year later.
Yoane Wissa
Another Premier League striker United could potentially look at is Brentford’s Yoane Wissa. The 28-year-old actually has a better goalscoring record than Mateta, having netted 11 times in 22 appearances in the Premier League so far this season.
He is slightly higher value than the other two, according to transfermarket who have hims valued at €28 million (£23.2m). Nottingham Forest saw a £22 million bid rejected by Brentford in the January transfer window, and Brentford do have the option of extending his current deal by a further year.
Weston McKennie
McKennie is a player who has been consistently linked with the Premier League over the last few transfer windows. The USA international has shown his versatility for Juventus over the last few months playing both at left and right back as well as his more natural central midfield and attacking midfield.
Transfermarkt value him at €24 million (£19.9m). Reports in Italy claim that he is being watched by Premier League teams, but Juve have opened talks with the player over a potential new deal.
Julian Brandt
The expected summer exit of Christian Eriksen and injury worries over Mason Mount mean that United could be looking for a new attacking midfielder in the summer. Borussia Dortmund’s Julian Brandt could well fit the bill and the 28-year-old has scored three times and provided five assists in 19 Bundesliga games so far this season.
He has also provided a further five assists in eight Champions League games. He is, however, the highest-valued played on the list at €35 million (£29 million). Reports late last year claimed that Brandt is one of the players that they are willing to let leave in the upcoming summer window.
