Manchester United’s new 100,000-seater stadium’s design include three towers inspired by the iconic Red Devils’ trident.

The club unveiled it’s plans for a stunning new stadium that will seat 100,000 people, making it the biggest in the country on Tuesday. The state-of-the-art arena will be built next to Old Trafford, but no details have been listed as to what will happen to the current ground. Man United still clearly want their brand new stadium to carry the roots of the club as they have shown through its design.

In a video shared on the clubs social media, Gary Neville said: “A new landmark will rise. A new theatre for dreams to come alive. A design inspired by the Red Devils trident, a modern take on our industrial routes.”

Man United have been nicknamed the ‘Red Devils’ since the 1960’s. It was important for the club to carry the moniker with them due to it’s deep history with the club.

The title was chosen by legendary manager Sir Matt Busby following the Munich Air Disaster, a plane crash which killed 23 people including eight players. It is a moment that is never forgotten across Manchester.

Busby now had to rebuild the squad, a challenge like no other. A new identity had to be found following the distressing loss of ‘The Busby Babes,‘ and it was found through a rugby club.

A local rugby club in Salford was often named the Reds, but the more popular name for the team was the ‘Red Devils.’ It had earned this nickname through French journalists when the Salford side dominated a tournament in France – they were deemed “Les Diables Rouges.”

Just months after the plane crash in 1958, the Salford Red Devils played a match at Old Trafford. Busby became a fan of the imposing and menacing imagery behind the team’s name, so he adopted it at Man United.

Now, around sixty years later, the importance of the Red Devils name is being brought to Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s new mega-stadium. The roof will see three towers sticking up, representing the trident held by the devil in the club’s iconic crest.
