Man United icon Wayne Rooney reveals he came close to signing Amad while in charge of Derby County – Man United News And Transfer News

Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has revealed that he was very close to signing Amad during his time in the Derby County dugout.

Before sustaining a serious injury last month, Amad’s form was one of the few bright points for United during an immensely difficult season. In 35 appearances across all competitions, Amad managed nine goals and seven assists.

He also signed a new contract in January, committing his future to the club until 2030.

It was thought that Amad’s injury would keep him out for the rest of the campaign but Ruben Amorim recently expressed hope that the forward could make a late comeback in the final weeks.

Rooney sat down with club media and spoke about Amad, divulging that he nearly signed him when he was Derby boss.

However, a transfer never materialised and the Ivorian ended up joining Rangers instead on a six-month loan – a year after arriving at Old Trafford from Atalanta.

Rooney said about the United N.o 16, “I think he’s been great. I tried to sign him for Derby, when I was at Derby, on loan. I thought I had him, really. I think it was the next day, he went to Rangers out of the blue.”

“He has been fantastic, with the goals he’s scored, [his] creativity and work-rate. He’s been a breath of fresh air and, of course, we’d like a few more players to step up.”

United’s record goalscorer added, “It’s been a difficult season, there’s no denying that, all season. But the new manager has come in and I really like him. The way he handles himself and speaks with the media, he’s been really good.”

“It’s probably more about getting through this season now and, hopefully, starting to implement his style more and getting players in to move the club forward.”

Rooney is among a number of influential figures set to play in Soccer Aid at Old Trafford on Sunday 15 June.

The event is the world’s biggest celebrity football match and seeks to raise money for children around the world.

The former England international told MUTV he is excited to play at the Theatre of Dreams once again, as he also encouraged fans to go out and buy tickets.
