Manchester United are reportedly interested in signing Eintracht Frankfurt’s Hugo Ekitike.
The 22-year-old forward has been in exceptional form in the Bundesliga, attracting interest from several top clubs.
According to Sky Sports Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg, Ekitiké is one of four striker targets for United, alongside RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko, Sporting CP’s Viktor Gyökeres, and Napoli’s Victor Osimhen, who is currently on loan at Galatasaray.
Ekitiké initially joined Frankfurt on loan before completing a permanent transfer last summer for just over €16 million.
Despite only spending a year at the club, reports suggest Frankfurt are open to selling him, with an €80 million valuation placed on the Frenchman.
The striker has enjoyed a prolific campaign, scoring 13 goals in the Bundesliga, making him the seventh-highest scorer in the league.
Additionally, he has provided four assists and registered the most shots on goal in the competition. He has also been a regular starter, featuring in the first eleven for 23 of Frankfurt’s 25 league games this season.
Ekitiké’s evolution into a clinical finisher has been key to his success.
In a recent interview, the Frenchman spoke about his growth as a striker, revealing that he has adjusted his playing style to focus more on direct goal-scoring opportunities.
“I realised I could shoot more during matches and be more dangerous like that,” he explained.
“I was participating in build-up play too much and not staying in the right zones as a forward. Now, I try to move around less and focus on scoring goals.”
His partnership with Omar Marmoush was a major factor in Frankfurt’s attack last season.
However, since Marmoush’s move to Manchester City in January, Ekitiké has continued his fine form, scoring five more goals.
United’s interest in Ekitiké comes as they struggle for consistency in front of goal.
Rasmus Højlund has shown promise, but the Red Devils need reinforcements to compete at the highest level.
With Champions League qualification uncertain, the club’s ability to land a high-profile striker this summer remains to be seen.
Frankfurt’s €80 million price tag could be a stumbling block, but negotiations may bring the fee down if United moves forward with their pursuit.
