Former centre-back Rio Ferdinand lauded Manchester United midfielder Casemiro for his performance in Thursday’s 3-0 Europa League semi-final first leg win over Athletic Bilbao, describing his showing as “sensational”.
United took a giant stride towards the final with a brilliant showing at San Mames, with all three of their goals coming before half-time.
After having to withstand a fair share of Bilbao pressure in the opening exchanges, Casemiro headed United in front after some brilliant work from Harry Maguire on the right flank, before a Bruno Fernandes brace put United 3-0 up.
Reunited with Manuel Ugarte in midfield, Casemiro was nothing short of excellent, helping United dictate the tempo for much of the game.
He completed 85 per cent of the 87 passes he attempted, had 109 touches of the ball, won nine of his 12 duels, completed five clearances and won four tackles.
And in the opinion of Ferdinand, who was co-commentating on TNT Sports, the Brazilian was “sensational”, hailing him for his leadership credentials.
“I don’t think Casemiro has put a foot wrong,” Ferdinand said. “He’s been sensational tonight. He has been so disciplined.
“People have been talking about getting rid of him, his legs have gone et cetera. But I tell you what, he’s come to the fore when they have needed him.
“He’s coaching this team through this and it’s a massive moment in the season for them.”
