Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim said he is “embarrassed” by the club’s current position in the Premier League table.

Amorim made the admission in his post-match press conference following United’s 2-0 defeat to West Ham at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.

Goals either side of half-time from Tomas Soucek and Jarrod Bowen condemned United to a 17th league defeat of the season, leaving them 16th in the table with just two games left to play. They are winless in their last seven league outings.

Post-match, Amorim was clearly frustrated, delivering a truly honest account of the situation. Below is a full transcript of every word he had to say when speaking to the media after the game:

Q: What’s the latest on Leny Yoro?

“We have to assess Leny in a better way tomorrow, he felt something but I think it could be a small thing.”

Q: What are your thoughts on the game?

“I think it’s quite similar to some games we have here, against Wolves was a little bit the same, we create more chances than the opponent but the lack of urgency to protect our goal in the few times West Ham was near our box, we had a lack of urgency, we were near the box and had a lack of urgency and we need to be more aggressive.

“If you cannot score in the first ball, the second ball, if we cross the ball if we are aggressive we can score, we had lack of pace, we have to do so much better. And for me the biggest concern is that feeling it’s okay, we cannot change our position so much so it’s okay.

“That is the biggest problem in our club in this moment because we are losing the feeling of we are a massive club and it’s the end of the world to lose a game at home. I think that is the biggest concern in our club.”

Q: You’re now 16th, how do you feel?

“How a manager of Manchester United is supposed to feel in that position: embarrassed, and it’s hard to accept. Everybody has to think seriously about a lot of things here.

Mason Mount covers his face with his hands during the defeat to West Ham United.
Manchester United have lost 17 Premier League games this season.

“Everybody is thinking about the final, the final is not an issue in this moment in our club, we have bigger things to think and we have to change a lot of things at the end of the season.”

Q: How do you feel about Manuel Ugarte’s performance today?

“I don’t want to talk about specific players, when it’s a team thing it’s a manager thing, so we will try to address that. It has to be with a lack of urgency to defend the box and attack the box.”

Q: Is there a culture issue?

“Yeah. I think it’s the feeling. I will not talk about culture but it’s a feeling it’s the most dangerous feeling we have in a big club.”

Q: Are you surprised by this situation?

“It’s a different competition but in the Europa League we don’t play quite well, but we have a little bit of that urgency, we cannot lose the games, we have to win it, we find a way to win the games,

“If Athletic Bilbao has a red card, we take advantage of that, we are so focused and you see these games in the Premier League, sometimes we are not focused. And we don’t have that feeling that we need to win to go the next stage like we have in Europa League. So it’s something mentally in our team.”

Q: Are the players picking and choosing [when to turn up]?

“It’s hard to explain that and that feeling, I have that feeling that lack of urgency in everything we do. It’s a big concern.”

Q: Are you surprised the fans are not turning?

“It is hard to say something about our fans and everybody. There is no explanation, no matter the context. And I’m talking here, I’m the biggest responsible for that. We need to change a lot of things during the summer.”

Q: What changes can you make in the summer?

“I don’t know and I don’t want to talk about players, I’m talking about myself, I’m talking about the culture in the club and the culture in the team.

“I have that feeling and we need to change that. We need to be really strong in the summer and be brave. We will not have a next season like this if we start like this. If the feeling is still here we should give space to different persons.”

Q: Is there no focus on the Premier League?

“To be honest with you, I’m not concerned about the final, it’s by far the smallest problem in our club. We need to change something that is deeper than this.

“We are showing in the end of the season, playing Premier League and Champions League for us is the moon. We need to know that and I’m not concerned about the final. They will be focused. I don’t know what is best. If it’s playing Champions League or not. So let’s think about Chelsea to improve a lot of things.”

Q: Chelsea up next…

“We are going to be prepared for Chelsea, we have to time to train and time to prepare.”
