Andre Onana is reportedly set to be dropped by Ruben Amorim for Manchester United’s final game of the season today with the goalkeeper’s future at the club described as “unclear”.
The Red Devils welcome Aston Villa to Old Trafford later this afternoon as their Premier League campaign draws to a close.
United are currently languished in 16th in the table having lost 18 times already this season. Amorim’s side are still yet to hit the 40 point threshold – currently on 39 – which typically guarantees safety from relegation.
If United were to lose to Villa, their final points total would have seen them relegated three times in the history of the Premier League based on previous campaigns.
It has been an unbelievably poor season which has shattered the illusion that the club had hit rock bottom last year with an 8th-placed finish under Erik ten Hag.
The Europa League had offered a chance to salvage success as victory in Bilbao would have secured Champions League qualification and the financial package entry into Europe’s elite competition brings.
But, true to form, United failed to show up at the San Mames Stadium and Tottenham Hotspur ran out 1-0 winners in a truly appalling final from both sides in which neither deserved to lift the trophy.
Onana, 29, could potentially have done better for Spurs’ goal after a mix-up between Luke Shaw and Patrick Dorgu led to Brennan Johnson converting a lucky half-chance.
But it’s not the first time the Cameroonian goalkeeper has made a mistake on the big stage for the Red Devils with a host of high-profile errors since arriving from Inter Milan for £47.2 million in 2023.
A new goalkeeper is not believed to be a priority at Old Trafford this summer with optimism amongst the executive branch that Onana can regain the form he showed earlier in the season, as well as prior to arriving in Manchester.
But Amorim may be set to demand a change of transfer plans given Centre Devils reports the Portuguese coach is set to drop Onana today while describing how the 29-year-old goalkeeper’s future “remains unclear” this summer.
Tweet: “Understand Andre Onana is set to be dropped from Manchester United lineup vs #AVFC today. Future remains unclear as we head into summer @centredevils.”
