Man United sporting director Dan Ashworth disagrees with Paul Mitchell’s transfer claims – Man United News And Transfer News

Paul Mitchell’s criticism of Newcastle United’s transfer structure has not gone down well with Manchester United’s sporting director Dan Ashworth.

Convincing Ashworth to leave Newcastle for United has been one of the most eye-catching moves INEOS have made since taking over the reins at United.

Despite the former FA director of elite development’s desire to move to Old Trafford, Newcastle were reluctant to part ways with him. However, after long-drawn negotiations, United managed to find an agreement with their Premier League opponent.

On July 1, the Red Devils announced the appointment of Ashworth as the club’s sporting director.

The 53-year-old spearheaded this summer’s transfer business, bringing in five senior players. Under Ashworth’s leadership, the club also addressed their youth setup by agreeing deals for highly-rated talents, including Sékou Koné. The Premier League giants also raised over €100 million in sales.

As such, Ashworth has earned plenty of plaudits for his exploits in his first transfer window at Old Trafford. However, it appears his work at St. James’ Park is not appreciated by everyone, not least Paul Mitchell.

Newcastle failed to sign a single player in the window. They spent the best part of the summer chasing Marc Guéhi, but could not find an agreement with Crystal Palace over a transfer fee. Their late attempt to sign ex-United winger Anthony Elanga from Nottingham Forest also proved to be unsuccessful.

After facing criticism for how he led the transfer window, Mitchell reportedly “criticised Newcastle’s scouting and data analysis practices.”

According to The Telegraph, Ashworth and other former members of Newcastle’s recruitment team have been “hurt and bemused” by Mitchell’s suggestion that the Magpies’ transfer structure was “not fit for purpose.”

The report adds that one of the figures has suggested Mitchell’s criticism was an “attempt to blame others for his own failure to sign a marquee player.”

It appears Mitchell has already started planning the January transfer window. Recently, The Peoples Person relayed a report claiming Newcastle are plotting a swoop for United forward Antony.

The Brazilian has been the biggest transfer disappointment during Ten Hag’s reign. However, Newcastle boss Eddie Howe is believed to be one of the admirers of his skill-sets.
