Manchester United have been handed a positive update on Viktor Gyokeres‘ future – after it was reported he’d agreed personal terms with Arsenal.

The Sporting CP star is one of the main targets for United in their bid to add a striker to their ranks this summer. Ruben Amorim signed the forward from Coventry City in 2023 and played a major role in him becoming the goal machine he is now.

Gyokeres has bagged a sensational 97 goals in 102 appearances for Sporting, a goal record that has seen interest accelerate for his signature. However, the Sweden international is yet to finalise a move away from Portugal.

On Tuesday night, French outlet L’Equipe reported that Arsenal were “closing in on reaching a verbal agreement” with the striker over personal terms. The saga then took another turn when journalist Sacha Tavolieri claimed the Gunners had in fact agreed a five-year deal with Gyokeres’ agent.

However, United’s hope of hijacking their Premier League rival’s move have been bolstered – with Fabrizio Romano revealing his information. Speaking on his YouTube channel, the journalist said: “There are many rumours that a deal is getting closer between Arsenal and Sporting.

“I’m told that there are still no changes, no advance negotiations to get a deal done between the clubs.

“We know Gyokeres and Arsenal have been in discussions for weeks because he is one of the main targets but, at the minute, nothing has been done. The price has to be clarified before Arsenal can agree a deal with Sporting.

“The priority for Gyokeres would be to go to Arsenal because of their Champions League football, but he’s never rejected Manchester United. The price is really important for United because now, the priority is on closing in the [Bryan] Mbeumo deal as soon as possible.”
