Breakthrough nears as United set to pay full asking price for wildcard midfield target – report

Manchester United are reportedly pushing to complete the signing of a surprise midfield target, with the club more than happy to meet his full asking price.

United want midfield reinforcements

So far this summer, United have primarily been concerned with bolstering their attacking department. After quickly tying up a deal for Matheus Cunha, the club swiftly turned their attention towards signing Bryan Mbeumo.

Talks with Brentford over a deal for Mbeumo have been going on for weeks now but an agreement is not thought to be close. However, there is still optimism that a compromise between the two sides will eventually be struck.

If or when they succeed in their efforts to land Mbeumo, the Red Devils are then likely to move on to securing the services of a striker before then addressing other areas of the squad, such as midfield.

Amorim is in desperate need of midfielders that suit the way he wants to set up his team – a need that has only become more urgent following the departure of Christian Eriksen.

United are believed to be eyeing a number of midfield targets, with Lyon’s Corentin Tolisso recently emerging as a shock name on their transfer wishlist.

United make contact for Tolisso

A report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that United made contact with Tolisso’s camp to explore the feasibility of a deal.

It was stated that the Frenchman has turned down offers from Turkey but is open to completing a “prestigious” switch to Old Trafford.

Lyon value Tolisso at €10m and now, a fresh update has indicated that United would have no problem forking out this sum.

United pressing ahead with their Tolisso pursuit

According to Le Progres [via SportWitness], United are “quite insistent” about making the former Bayern Munich man the latest addition to their ranks.

The news outlet confirms that Tolisso has indeed been rejecting offers from elsewhere but he would find it hard to rebuff Ruben Amorim’s side. He has never asked to part ways with Lyon but United could make him reconsider this stance.

The 20-time English champions are understood to be more than willing to meet Lyon’s €10m valuation of the 30-year-old.

While Lyon are not keen on offloading their best player, the money on offer, especially considering their financial troubles, could force them into sanctioning a sale.

Tolisso is under contract at Lyon until the summer of 2027.
