Manchester United appear to be in the running to sign a high-performing holding midfielder to their ranks.
Since the start of the ongoing transfer window, focus has been placed on Man United upgrading their attacking lineup.
Following the signing of Matheus Cunha, United have continued to be linked with a host of attacking talents, with the pursuit of Bryan Mbeumo dragging along.
Now, it seems that United may be shifting their sights to the midfield.
Filling the gap
While midfielders do not appear to be a hot topic in the media, United manager Ruben Amorim will surely be looking for some fresh talent given his team’s struggles.
Christian Eriksen has left the club, thereby leaving a void that will need to be filled, while it remains to be seen how long Casemiro will still be able to perform at a high level.
While Kobbie Mainoo has been a promising rising star, he has faced injury setbacks, while Manuel Ugarte still appears to be unproven.
As a result, a capable holding midfielder might be required by United in order to bolster their ability to dictate the flow of play next season.
Identifying their next target
This morning, several reports suggested that United are interested in Sporting CP’s Morten Hjulmand.
Record reported this morning that United and Inter are set to battle with Juventus to sign the player, with the Italian club considering him a priority transfer.
Furthermore, the report claimed that an offer starting at €60 million could be sufficient to sign the defensive midfielder, with the player’s release clause set at €80 million.
Still, the article claimed that it appears most likely that Hjulmand will remain at Sporting, seeing as no concrete offers have been made.
Meanwhile, A Bola reiterated claims that United are linked to Hjulmand.
“The player’s agents waved an offer of €30 to €40 million from Juventus, and there are also interested parties in England,” A Bola’s report read.
“To everyone, including the Italians who, through the player’s agents, sent their intentions of an offer to Alvalade, the Lions’ management, as A Bola knows, has only one answer to give: a release clause of €80 million, or very close to it.”
The race is on
Hjulmand has proven UEFA Champions League experience, winning an impressive 67% of his ground duels in nine appearances last season. He also enjoyed 88% passing accuracy on average. (Sofascore)
Given his proven ability to play at an elite level, United are sure to face a tough battle against Inter and Juventus should they decide to make a move for the Dane.
