United trio are crowned Euro champions as England Women defeat Spain on penalties

Manchester United trio Ella Toone, Grace Clinton and Maya Le Tissier are champions of Europe.

England completed a storybook victory over Spain with their second penalty shootout victory of the tournament.

The Lionesses drew the match 1-1 and after extra-time, beat the World champions 3-1 on penalties to win their second consecutive Women’s Euros.

Former Red Devils played major role

Former Red Devils also played an important role as Spain’s Ona Battle, who used to play for United, provided the cross for the Spaniards’ opening goal.

Fellow former United striker, Alessia Russo also headed in England’s equaliser in normal time.

Ella Toone wins second Euros

Toone scored a goal in the final of Euro 2022 and despite having a more significant role last time out, she did play her part.

She completed 87% of her passes during her 87 minutes on the pitch, before being replaced by Bethany Mead.

Toone also had one successful dribble attempt and had one effort on goal that was blocked.

She also had one key pass during the game and made one clearance and interception.

Toone finished the tournament with two goals and two assists and started in five consecutive matches after missing out in the opening match.

Grace Clinton had much less time on the pitch during the tournament but she did provide a 5 minute cameo in the final, as she entered the field of play after 115 minutes.

She did get some time on the pitch in five of England’s six games, including all three knockout matches.

Maya Le Tissier failed to see a minute of action but being around a winning squad will do her the world of good. United’s 23-year-old captain will undoubtedly play her part for England in many major tournaments to come.

Manchester United Women’s X sent a congratulatory message to the United trio.

In addition, the male team posted a photo on X of some of the squad watching the final whilst on pre-season tour of the United States.

Whilst the trio will go and enjoy a well-earned holiday, United Women will be back in action soon in pre-season.

They have four matches in August including an opening fixture against Aston Villa this coming Sunday.

There are also exciting games against Liverpool, Real Betis and Manchester City on the horizon before the Women’s Super league begins in September.
