Manchester United’s hunt for a new centre-forward this summer seems to have made its way to RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko.

The Slovenian international scored 21 goals in all competitions for his team last season, including four in eight Champions League matches. His goalscoring remained consistent despite Leipzig struggling in the Bundesliga and ultimately finishing outside of the top four.

It is widely expected that after missing out on Champions League football, Sesko would look to seek a move away from Germany and while United cannot offer him a seat at the European top table, they are believed to be in the running. So after a day filled with updates on Sesko, MEN Sport has rounded up what is being said about the forward and a potential move to Old Trafford.

United ‘contact’

Various reports have stated that United have made contact with Sesko over the weekend.

The Reds have reportedly set out their project to the 22-year-old and have enquired about the finances involved.

According to Fabrizio Romano, these talks took place with Sesko’s agency on Sunday night and Monday morning after it became apparent that a Premier League rival was looking to swoop in for the forward.

Newcastle ‘prepare bid’

Romano added that Newcastle had already set out their project to the striker and that they were already in a position to place a bid for the centre-forward.

It is understood that Leipzig could be looking for as much as £69m this summer, and the Magpies are willing to match that price.

Seems open and shut, doesn’t it? Well, perhaps not.

Sesko ‘stance’

Sky Sport Deutschland journalist Florian Plettenberg shed further light on the situation on Monday night.

While his report mostly aligned with Romano’s report, Plettenberg explained Sesko’s stance on the process.

He is believed to be impressed by United’s approach for him and their desire to get a deal done.

It is claimed he received clear figures regarding what he could earn in Manchester and further details on Ruben Amorim’s project.

United are not believed to be out of the race for Sesko by a long stretch.

The gentleman’s ‘agreement’

Underpinning this entire saga is a gentleman’s agreement understood to be in place between RB Leipzig and Sesko.

When the forward signed a new contract last summer, an agreement was reached that stated he could leave for a ‘special’ club.

This is a rather broad remit, which could play into United’s favour more so than Newcastle’s.

However, with the Magpies willing to pay Leipzig’s asking price but the Reds impressing Sesko, the transfer could go either way.
