Amorim refuses to rule out one potentially shocking departure and one potentially huge arrival

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has admitted that while he is happy with his current squad, he would like to strengthen in two positions before the window closes.

United’s summer window so far

United have so far completed the signings of two players – Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo from Wolverhampton Wanderers and Brentford respectively.

Heading into the summer window, strengthening the attacking department was United’s top priority and the club has partially done so with the acquisitions of Cunha and Mbeumo.

Cunha has already lined up for the Red Devils, turning out in pre-season clashes against Leeds United and West Ham. The Brazilian was rested for the emphatic 4-1 victory over Bournemouth. Meanwhile, Mbeumo has yet to make an appearance for United because he is still catching up in terms of fitness and match sharpness.

But, Mbeumo is expected to play a part in Sunday’s meeting with Everton in Atlanta.

At the moment, United full focus seems to be on securing the services of a top-class striker. The 20-time English champions are hot on the trail of RB Leipzig forward Benjamin Sesko, who is the preferred target over Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins.

United are facing a battle to sign Sesko, who is also attracting strong interest from Newcastle. The Magpies have already lodged an opening bid for the Slovenian.

Ahead of United’s clash vs. Everton, Amorim outlined his transfer ambitions for the rest of the window.

Amorim outlines his transfer plans

Asked whether he hopes to have a new striker and goalkeeper, the Portuguese coach answered [as quoted by Manchester Evening News], “To hope is a strong word. We are always looking to improve the team.”

“And we have some characteristics that we would like to have. But again, it depends on the market. It depends on the sales. We’ll see.”

“But I’m really happy. And I think even when you talk about Andre, you can see the goalkeepers.”

He added, “Even Tom (Heaton) is leaner, he’s a different goalkeeper. Altay (Bayindir) did really well and Onana is going to be better like the other guys that are getting better this year.”

Amorim also refused to rule out Rasmus Hojlund’s departure. The Dane has been linked with a switch to Leipzig as part of the Sesko deal but it’s believed his preference is to stay.

United vs Everton kicks off at 10 pm at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
