“Since I’ve been here…“: Harry Maguire sends warning shot to Arsenal ahead of Premier League opener

Manchester United will kick-off the new Premier League season with a blockbuster clash against fierce rivals Arsenal at Old Trafford on Sunday.

And the players will be eager to repay the fans, after what transpired last term. And sending a statement with a win against one of their traditional rivals will go a long way in righting the wrongs of the last campaign.

Harry Maguire, who has been part of many a memorable opening day triumphs, explained to the club website how exciting it is to return to the Theatre of Dreams, and how the entire squad is looking forward to the battle against the Gunners.

“You always get excited with that first game. But you [also] know it’s a big game. Arsenal are top team, one of the best teams in the Premier League and we’ve always had great rivalries with them.

Opening day jitters

“I think Sunday at Old Trafford, I’m sure it’ll be sunny again and it always is on that first day. We’ve had some good memories on the first day at Old Trafford since I’ve been here.

“Throughout pre-season you’re always thinking about that first game and it’s really important that you’re ready for that first game.

“As a footballer, it’s probably the most nervous you are for a game but also the one that you most looking forward to as well.

“So, a lot of emotion into the game and like I said it’s a perfect fixture for us. A big game, big occasion and hopefully we can step up.”

Famous opening day wins

His first game for the club was a hugely memorable 4-0 thrashing of Chelsea in 2019, while Leeds were tossed aside 5-1 at Old Trafford back in the 21/22 season.

“I can remember my debut against Chelsea and we played Leeds as well, so it’s been an amazing experience.

“It’s an amazing stadium, it’s going to be an amazing atmosphere. We’ve prepared well and now we’ve just got this last week to get through and prepare as well as we can and go into the game.”

Hopefully, the Red Devils can start on a positive note, and translate their good form in pre-season into the game against Mikel Arteta’s side.
