The latest Manchester United transfer news amid updates on Angelo Stiller and Kobbie Mainoo.
The transfer window is due to reopen on New Year’s Day, and Manchester United may well look to return to the negotiating table for some of the names they were linked with this summer.
United welcomed five new players; Matheus Cunha, Benjamin Sesko, Bryan Mbeumo, Senne Lammens and Diego Leon. Although signing a new midfielder was also on the agenda – with Carlos Baleba under consideration – Brighton & Hove Albion’s valuation of over £100million forced the club to potentially put that approach on hold until next summer.
Instead, Lammens was brought in on deadline day to reinforce the goalkeeping position. But the January transfer window could provide United with an opportunity to strengthen Ruben Amorim’s squad further.
Here, we take a look at the latest headlines and gossip from in and around Old Trafford;
Stiller ‘stance’ revealed
Despite being heavily linked with a move to United, journalist Fabrizio Romano reckons Angelo Stiller was “never close” to leaving Stuttgart this summer. Real Madrid were also linked with his services, but apparently the Spanish giants “never agreed” personal terms.
The same was said for United, but the midfielder is still believed to be open to a move abroad.
The Manchester Evening News says: This development could prove encouraging for United if they decide to revive any interest in the New Year. With midfield reinforcements high on the club’s priority list, Carlos Baleba and Adam Wharton have also been linked, and it remains to be seen which of the three emerges as the preferred target. Stiller, however, is reportedly open to leaving Germany and would likely command a significantly lower fee than the £100million-plus Brighton demanded for Baleba.
Three clubs ‘wanted’ Mainoo
United blocked Kobbie Mainoo from securing a move away during the transfer window, despite the youngster requesting a loan to gain more game time this season. According to The Daily Mail, three Premier League clubs – Tottenham, Aston Villa, and Everton – attempted to sign Mainoo.
Meanwhile, Italian sides Napoli and Roma, as well as French team Marseille, also expressed an interest. However, Amorim was keen to retain the 20-year-old following injuries to Matheus Cunha and Mason Mount.
“I want Kobbie to stay and he needs to fight for his place,” United head coach Amorim said.
“We need Kobbie and that’s not going to change. The players not playing with be disappointed but everyone will have opportunities. You have to fight in the week.”
The Manchester Evening News says: With injuries to Cunha and Mount, Amorim may be more inclined to hand Mainoo additional minutes. While playing time must be earned, the youngster has hardly put a foot wrong and has already proven influential in key matches for the Reds. Regular opportunities are vital for his development at this stage, and United’s decision to block a summer move elsewhere suggests that is very much part of the club’s long-term plan.
