Man United’s Carlos Baleba transfer hopes raised after £666m boost

It has been a difficult start to the season for Manchester United, but their hopes of spending more money on transfer targets away going forward have seemingly been given a huge boost

Manchester United’s hopes of signing Carlos Baleba have been boosted by their recent financial results.

The Red Devils recently unveiled the results of their fourth quarter trading period for the year ended June 30, 2025. Matters on the pitch have been difficult for Ruben Amorim’s side, who were convincingly defeated 3-0 by Manchester City in the derby on Sunday.

However, commercially the club is still operating at a high level after fourth quarter revenues for the year reached £164million, taking their revenues for the year to a record breaking £666.5m. The club also confirmed these figures have put them in a favourable position when it comes to the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

This will be a huge boost for their aspirations of making a fresh move for Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder Baleba. The Red Devils were looking at a move for the central midfielder shortly after they added Benjamin Sesko to their new frontline, which also now includes Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha.

However, after Brighton placed a steep price tag – believed to be around £100m – on his head, United pulled their interest for the time being.

They could go back in for the 21-year-old in 2026, as the club’s midfield has been a glaring weakness. United have also been linked with a move for Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton as an alternative.

Due to their positive financial results, United will have some PSR wriggle room which could be put towards a move for the likes of Baleba.

Commenting on the Reds’ financial results, CEO Omar Berrada said: “As we settle into the 2025/26 season, we are working hard to improve the club in all areas. On the field, we are pleased with the additions we have made to our men’s and women’s first team squads over the summer, as we build for the long-term.

Sky has slashed the price of its Essential TV and Sky Sports bundle for the 2025/26 season, saving members £336 and offering more than 1,400 live matches across the Premier League, EFL and more.

Sky will show at least 215 live Premier League games this season, an increase of up to 100 more.

“Off the field, we are emerging from a period of structural and leadership change with a refreshed, streamlined organisation equipped to deliver on our sporting and commercial objectives.

“We are also investing to upgrade our infrastructure, including completion of the £50m redevelopment of our men’s first team building at Carrington, on time and on budget, following prior investment in our women’s team facilities, to create a world-class environment for our players and staff.

“Meanwhile, planning continues to meet our ambition of developing a new stadium at Old Trafford as part of a transformational regeneration of the surrounding community. To have generated record revenues during such a challenging year for the club demonstrates the resilience which is a hallmark of Manchester United.

“Our commercial business remains strong as we continue to deliver appealing products and experiences for our fans, and best-in-class value to our partners. As we start to feel the benefits of our cost-reduction programme, there is significant potential for improved financial performance, which will, in turn, support our overriding priority: success on the pitch.”

United have been struggling in the midfield throughout Amorim’s time at the club. He has mainly deployed Bruno Fernandes alongside Casemiro and Manuel Ugarte, while United academy talent Kobbie Mainoo has had to directly compete with the club captain for a place in the side.

The Red Devils host Chelsea at Old Trafford on Saturday evening before travelling to Brentford in their following Premier League match.
