Manchester United claimed three points over Chelsea but Ruben Amorim has been told his players exhibited something more important at Old Trafford in the Premier League
Ruben Amorim has been told that Manchester United is not a good team, but that he can take heart from his players’ attitudes in the victory over Chelsea.
Ex-Newcastle United striker Alan Shearer believes Amorim‘s side remain a work in progress but that they made a ‘big statement’ by hanging on to claim three points against the Blues at Old Trafford.
A dramatic Premier League clash saw Robert Sanchez shown red after just five minutes, allowing United to take the lead through goals from Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro.
The Brazilian midfielder was then sent off on the verge of half-time and Trevoh Chalobah’s 80th-minute effort saw Amorim’s men come under siege in the final moments.
Shearer reckons the mentality shown by United’s stars at that stage will prove more vital to the Portuguese head coach than the three points, and that Amorim should be pleased with their efforts.
“You’d hope Man United will build from this result,” he told Betfair. “Just because they beat Chelsea who had 10 men, it doesn’t make them a very good team. They’re not. They’re a work in progress.
“What Amorim can be really pleased with is the attitude and what his players gave him in the second half when they were under huge pressure.
“They were hanging on for their lives when Chelsea got their goal and you didn’t see anyone not giving their all. That was a big statement – maybe more than the result.
“It was a big, needed result but I think, as well as being very grateful for the three points, I think he’ll think about his players, ‘when I was under the cosh, you actually came out fighting.’
“Amorim has a much better chance of getting things right when the players are with him.”
