Man United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe lands £100m windfall as major Ineos deal agreed

Manchester United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has found a new title sponsor for one of his teams which could see him earn a pretty penny

Manchester United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe is poised for a significant financial boost after securing a new title sponsor.

Sir Jim presides over the INEOS sports conglomerate, owning shares in football clubs such as United and Nice, whilst also investing heavily in other sports like sailing and rugby.

However, it’s in the realm of cycling where he stands to make a tidy sum courtesy of his team, the INEOS-Grenadiers.

The Times reports that Sir Jim is on the verge of surrendering the naming rights of the team in a £100million agreement with Danish IT company Netcompany.

The report suggests the IT firm, which recently became the main digital operations partner for Heathrow airport, has struck a five-year deal with the team.

Established in 2010 under the banner of Team Sky and Dave Brailsford, who has since collaborated with Ratcliffe at Nice and United, the British team dominated the cycling world, clinching seven Tours de France in eight years between 2012 and 2019.

However, their supremacy has begun to fade with the rise of Slovenian sensation Tadej Pogacar and his UAE Team Emirates-XRG super team.

INEOS-Grenadiers made significant moves during the winter to recruit Tour de France fourth-place finisher Oscar Onley and rising French star Kévin Vauquelin.

Despite these additions, their budget still lags behind UAE, Red Bull-BORA-Hansgrohe and Team Visma-Lease a Bike.

And it was those two teams that caused INEOS-Grenadiers a major problem on Wednesday during Paris-Nice, one of the most significant races of the early season.

In a crash-filled race that saw leader Juan Aysuo forced to withdraw, Onley and Vauquelin were dropped under the pressure from Red Bull – who inadvertently gave two-time Tour de France champion Jonas Vingegaard a comfortable ride to the finish line.
