Michael Carrick strengthening his case for permanent appointment with impressive home record

Between the final months of Erik ten Hag’s tenure and the ill-fated Ruben Amorim era, Old Trafford became more or less a playground for visitors, with Manchester United suffering a record nine home league defeats in the 2024/25 season.

United also won just one of their final five home matches prior to Amorim’s departure, and by January 2026, the “Theatre of Dreams” had become a theatre of apathy.

Enter Michael Carrick. Since taking the interim reins, Carrick has not only stabilised a sinking ship; he has begun to restore the fear factor at Old Trafford.

Carrick currently boasts a 100% home record since taking the reins from Amorim in January, securing five victories from five matches at Old Trafford so far, including a 2-0 win over Manchester City in his first assignment.

This 15-point haul at home has been the driving force behind United’s meteoric rise to third in the table.

With games against Leeds United, Brentford, Liverpool and Nottingham Forest to come, Manchester United have a strong chance of setting their longest league home winning streak in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era, which currently stands at eight under ten Hag in 2022/23.

As the summer search for a permanent manager looms—with names like Xavi and Nagelsmann circulating—the data makes a compelling case for the man already in the dugout.

If the fortress remains unbreached through May, it will not only represent interim success for Carrick but also provide a mandate for his permanent appointment, regardless of how many times he may have claimed he does not want the job on a full-time basis.
