Bournemouth trip could shape Man Utd’s top-four race with Villa, Liverpool & Chelsea

Manchester United’s last Premier League fixture before the international break pits them against mid-table Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium on Friday evening.

United’s top-four quest received a decisive boost last Sunday, as Michael Carrick’s side secured a superb 3-1 home win over fourth-placed Aston Villa.

With Liverpool held to a 1-1 draw by relegation-battling Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea beaten by Newcastle United, the Red Devils now sit third in the Premier League standings, five points clear of the Europa League zone.

It’s now up to the 20-time English champions to build on that favourable weekend and stretch their momentum on the road against Andoni Iraola’s out-of-form side, even though it could prove easier said than done.

The Cherries have been a tricky opponent for the Old Trafford giants lately, as most recently evidenced by a 4-4 draw in December.

Vengeance time

Bournemouth are currently on their longest unbeaten streak against Man Utd, having avoided defeat in their last five meetings in the Premier League (W2, D3), including a pair of stunning 3-0 wins in Manchester.

However, Iraola’s men head into proceedings amid a rough patch.

In addition to drawing their last four league games, the Cherries have lost key midfielder Tyler Adams to injury, as confirmed by Iraola in the build-up to this showdown.

Unlike their hosts, United will take this trip in high spirits after winning three of their last four Premier League outings (L1) to cement their place as the division’s most in-form side.

Indeed, the Red Devils have amassed a league-high 23 points in ten matches since parting ways with Ruben Amorim in early January, suggesting now could be a perfect time to break their drought in this fixture.

There’s no doubt that a victory at the Vitality Stadium would help Man Utd distance themselves further from their top-four competitors and maintain a feel-good factor ahead of the international break.

Despite Bournemouth’s recent slump, the visitors would be naive to take anything for granted, given that they’ve won just one of their last four Premier League visits to Boscombe (D2, L1).

Rivals in focus

Villa’s defeat at Old Trafford last weekend left them three points adrift of Man Utd heading into the last eight rounds.

More importantly, Unai Emery’s men have now lost three consecutive league games, significantly compromising their chances of securing a top-four finish.

They will be desperate to bounce back when they lock horns with relegation-threatened West Ham United at Villa Park on Sunday.

However, fatigue could pose a threat to Villa’s efforts to get back on track, as they face Lille in the return leg of their Europa League knockout tie on Thursday.

Nothing of the sort will trouble defending champions Liverpool, who put on a vintage performance in a 4-0 rout of Galatasaray on Wednesday.

Arne Slot hailed his side’s ‘perfect’ win at Anfield, which propelled the Reds to the Champions League quarter-finals, but there’s no room for celebration.

Sitting two points behind fourth-placed Villa, Liverpool cannot afford a slip-up in Saturday’s away clash against resurgent Brighton & Hove Albion.

The Seagulls have clinched three victories in their last four league matches, while they’ve held the Merseyside giants winless in four of their five most recent Premier League meetings at the Amex Stadium.

In stark contrast, Chelsea now need to regroup after suffering a 3-0 home defeat to Paris Saint-Germain, culminating in a crushing 8-2 aggregate loss in their Champions League tie.

Liam Rosenior’s underperforming side face Everton on the road on Saturday, desperately looking to turn their fortunes around after losing twice in their last three league outings.

As things stand, this could be another opportunity for Man Utd to extend their cushion over their top-four rivals, provided they take care of business at the Vitality Stadium.

United are live on Sky Sports for tonight’s Friday night fixture, with the game available to watch via soccer streams for those United fans outside the UK.
