Manchester United Legends player ratings vs Southampton as Valencia and Campbell star but Berbatov misses penaltys

Man Utd Legends beat Southampton Legends 5-3 at St Mary’s, with Phil Bardsley and Frazier Campbell scoring twice and Danny Webber also finding the back of the net.

Manchester United Legends turned on the style at Southampton as they scored five time at St Mary’s to get the better of an eight-goal thriller on the south coast.

Lee Barnard gave Southampton Legends the lead against the run of play, steering a smart finish past Raimond van der Gouw, but it was United Legends who dominated the first half, equalising in stoppage time through Phil Bardsley.

The goals began to flow in the second half. Frazier Campbell scored twice, with Rickie Lambert and Barnard twice equalising before Danny Webber scored. There was still time for a fifth, with Bardsley adding his second of the game, while Dimitar Berbatov also missed a penalty.

Here’s how the United players rated:

Raimond van der Gouw: A solid 45 minutes for the 63-year-old who showed good hands to claim a corner and reactions to gather a free-kick he had initially spilt. 7

Phil Bardsley: Ropey defensively but turned it on in the final third. Absent for Southampton’s goal and led a ball roll under his feet, but scored a great goal. 7

Ronny Johnsen: Had to do the full 90 minutes and was understandably struggling a little toward the end, but he held firm and showed some intelligence when defending. 7

Wes Brown: Pulled off a Cruyff turn in the first half that got him a standing ovation and a story that he will be telling for years to come. Solid. 7

Danny Simpson: Went off early in the second half for Danny Pugh. Looked sharp enough still but didn’t see an awful lot of the ball. 6

Darron Gibson: Showed he still has a good passing range with some good balls and set up Bardsley for his fifth. Got stuck into the midfield battle. 7

Eric Djemba-Djemba: Managed to do 78 minutes but looked tired as the game wore on. Solid enough in the first half but contributions reduced as the game wore on. 6

Antonio Valencia: Looks as fast now as he was at United. Flew down the right flank and created countless chances for teammates. Also denied a stonewall penalty. 8

Danny Webber: Unlucky to see a first-half shot blocked and should have done better with a very late chance, but made sure to get his name on the scoresheet. 7

Louis Saha: Really nice turn to create space to shoot but slipped when taking his effort and was forced off injured as a result. 5

Dimitar Berbatov: Hit the post in the first four minutes but got frustrated as the half wore on. Won a penalty, which he then managed to miss, but one silky touch late on was a reminder of his class. 7

Substitutes

Kevin Pikington: Beaten twice but couldn’t do much about either and handling was solid enough. 6

Bojan Djordjic: Only came on for the final 12 minutes but showed some quality with the pass that helped create the fourth goal. 7

Danny Pugh: Delivered a brilliant cross from the left which saw Campbell power an excellent header against the crossbar. 7

Frazier Campbell: Scored twice and could have had more. Might have been on earlier than expected but still looks lean and was dangerous throughout. 8
