A place in next season’s UEFA Champions League is potentially at stake as Manchester United and Liverpool go head-to-head in the latest instalment of one of the iconic rivalries in English football.

Interim boss Michael Carrick is on the brink of guiding the Red Devils to their first Premier League top-four finish since the 2022/23 season, with United boasting an 11-point lead over sixth-placed Brighton & Hove Albion.

With only four games left to play, Man Utd are in firm control of their destiny, as they bid to finish above the Reds in the Premier League standings for the first time in three years.

However, soon-to-be-former champions Liverpool are breathing down United’s necks, trailing the Old Trafford giants by a mere three points following a late-season resurgence.

Arne Slot’s charges have won three consecutive league games in the lead-up to this mouth-watering clash, moving within touching distance of securing a Champions League return despite their embarrassing title defence.

More than just a game

Not many people in the current dressing understand the significance of the occasion better than Carrick, who admitted that this encounter ‘feels like a one-off game.’

Goals from Bryan Mbeumo and Harry Maguire inspired Man Utd to a hard-earned 2-1 win at Anfield in October, giving them a chance to complete their first league double over Liverpool since the 2015/16 campaign.

Carrick could become the first United manager since Louis van Gaal to achieve this feat, but the home side would be wise not to take anything for granted, given their recent record in this fixture.

Indeed, the Red Devils have won just three of the last 19 meetings between the sides in all competitions (D9, L7), perhaps best illustrating the magnitude of the task ahead.

Despite that disappointing record, confidence comes from Man Utd’s remarkable turnaround under Carrick, who is increasingly heading towards a permanent contract at the Theatre of Dreams.

Team transformed

United’s decision to appoint Carrick as a caretaker boss in January after parting ways with Ruben Amorim raised a few eyebrows, largely thanks to the 44-year-old’s lack of experience in senior management.

However, the former midfielder has defied the odds, re-establishing the 20-time English champions as a force to be reckoned with over the past few months.

No Premier League team has picked up more points than Man Utd’s 29 since Carrick’s return to the dugout, putting the former Middlesbrough boss in pole position for the job beyond the summer.

Carrick’s next task is to prevent Slot from becoming the first-ever Liverpool manager to win his first two league visits to Old Trafford following a 3-0 rout in this fixture last term.

Back-to-back victories over Chelsea and Brentford inspire further confidence, as does the fact that the Red Devils haven’t lost at home to a current top-half side since the opening weekend (W6, D1).

Heavyweight clash

Liverpool travel to Manchester on their longest winning run (W3) since the opening five games of the season, finding their feet just in time for this blockbuster showdown.

That’s hardly enough to intimidate high-flying Man Utd and in-form Casemiro, who scored his ninth league goal against Brentford on Monday, shortly before being named United’s ‘Player of the Month’ for April.

Casemiro’s electrifying form has helped the Red Devils rebuild their home fortress this year, with Carrick’s side picking up an eye-catching six wins in seven Premier League outings at Old Trafford in 2026 (L1).

Whether Liverpool can put that record in harm’s way remains highly doubtful, given that they’ve won just one of their last 12 league clashes against sides starting the day in the top three (D7, L4).

On that basis, the omens are positive for Man Utd, who look well-equipped to extend their recent resurgence and take bragging rights in one of the most heavily anticipated fixtures in the Premier League calendar.
