Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has highlighted Manchester United’s poor decision-making as one of their main problems in the 1-1 draw against Ipswich Town on Sunday.
United made their way to Portman Road to take on Kieran McKenna’s men, in what was Amorim’s first game as club boss.
The Portuguese coach got off to a fairytale start, as Marcus Rashford tapped in a superb cross from Amad Diallo.
However, Ipswich steadily grew into the game, capitalising on some poor moments from United, and eventually got their reward just before the break. Omari Hutchninson’s effort deflected off Noussair Mazraoui to head into the back of the net.
Both sides had chances in the second half but neither could score and eventually had to settle for a share of the points.
After the match, Amorim spoke to Sky Sports and gave his verdict on the match.
He lambasted some of his players’ decision-making, insisting that the 3-4-3 formation is not the main problem. He also said that he needs more time in the training ground to drill his tactics and methods into the squad.
Amorim told Sky, “The players were thinking too much. It is a tough match, we lost some balls without pressure. You have to control the ball, the tempo of the game. We can not do it at the moment but they tried. They are really, really trying.”
“Decision-making is a concern, you can’t coach them at this level. We are doing some things not in the right moment and that’s what we have to address.”
“The 3-4-3 is not the concern, the understanding of the game is what we have to improve.”
The 39-year-old added, “We will have problems, the players will be confused sometimes, but by this time next year, I promise you we won’t have the same struggles.”
“This week I spoke [in interviews] more than four years in Sporting. I just want to work with my players nothing more, but I understand it’s a different game here.”
“If we try to just win games and don’t risk anything in this moment, I guarantee next year at the same stage we will have the same problems. We have to address the new idea and try to be better.”
He also pointed out the low physical levels as something that needs to be improved.
United’s next assignment will see them face FK Bodø/Glimt in the Europa League on Thursday.
