Cunha reputedly has a £62.5 million release clause in the contract extension he signed earlier this year. According to The Athletic, Wolves want that fee paid in full to sanction a sale.
United, therefore, would have to raise such sums through outgoing transfers. Permanently parting with players currently away from the club on loan would be one way to do that. There are options to do so in the deals that saw Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford and Tyrell Malacia depart.
Rashford, though, has the most sizeable fee, set at £40million when joining Aston Villa. Combined with Sancho staying at Stamford Bridge, those two fees would cover Cunha’s release clause, regardless of what Antony, who Real Betis do not have an option to buy, is sold for.
However, Fichajes.net claims that Rashford dreams of playing for Barcelona. Mundo Deportivo also reported in January that his dream is to wear their Blaugrana shirt.
This latest reporting cites sources close to the Catalan club and claims they are preparing a £34.3million (€40m) offer. The outlet claims that such a figure would come under serious consideration by United despite being circa £6million less than Villa’s option to sign the player.
Rashford preferring a move to Barcelona over Birmingham could complicate any deal for Cunha. Due to their financial situation, the club has struggled to comply with La Liga salary limits when registering players over recent seasons.
Any repeated problems when attempting to overcome those hurdles would no doubt delay the transfer. The Mail claims that United hopes to have an agreement with Cunha next month because they still have room to manoeuvre regarding Premier League profitability and sustainability rules.
That suggests the club will try to sign Cunha before the end of June. Their next financial year starts on July 1.
