Predicted XI: Hojlund to lead the line against Bournemouth? Amass to start after Dalot injury? Mainoo to partner Ugarte in midfield?

Manchester United return to Premier League action with the end of the season in sight. Ruben Amorim’s side will be expected to get some good results under their belt, especially with the UEFA Europa League semi final first leg on the horizon. United have been uninspiring in the league this season but there is a glimmer of hope.

United are out of the race for European football next season due to their lowly league position but winning the Europa League would see them in the UEFA Champions League next season, which would be quite funny to see. United are the only team in a European competition to be undefeated this season, which is a good thing.

It is a shame that this form was not in display in the Premier League this season. Amorim seems to be the right man for the job as he has made some positive changes at the Old Trafford club which will create a foundation for the club going forward. Blooding in talented youth players will be a major positive this season.

Predicted Manchester United Starting XI – 3-4-2-1

Onana;

Mazraoui, Maguire, Yoro;

Amass, Ugarte, Mainoo, Dorgu;

Fernandes, Garnacho;

Hojlund

Goalkeeper: Onana

Andre Onana seems to be the goalkeeper pick for the remainder of the season with Ruben Amorim to decide whether the goalkeeper will remain at United after the summer. United needs stability in goal and with the Cameroonian conceding 144 goals in two seasons, there is a big problem to solve.

Onana is a competent goalkeeper but his time at United has been buoyed with problems from injury to key defenders to blatant errors committed by the goalkeeper. This is not the sort of style United want to have going forward as it seems the Cameroonian could be beaten in any attack, which is bad for the club.

Altay Bayindir may get some time in goal this season, with five Premier League matches remaining (including this one) and United need to keep key players fresh and injury free ahead of the next two matches in the UEFA Europa League which is United win, could see them in the Europa League final in Bilbao in May.

Defenders: Mazraoui, Maguire, Yoro

United’s defence will need to be similar to the last few matches with United near to barebones in defence with a number of injuries at the club at this stage of the season. Noussair Mazraoui should start on the right side of the defensive three as his experience in that position this season is second to none.

Harry Maguire should be starting in the centre of the defence with his height a major positive for for the club – not to mention his ability in both defence and attack with him scoring a goal last week against Lyon which saw United go through to the semi finals of the Europa League this season. United have a good leader in Maguire.

Leny Yoro should be starting on the left side of the defence with United seeing him grow into his position this season after suffering an injury in pre-season and missing much of the start of the season. The player has enormous ability and his presence will be a win for United for years to come. United have some options on the bench.

Midfield: Amass, Ugarte, Mainoo, Dorgu

The United midfield have been a problem all season with many different injuries to different players and some inconsistencies. That said, some players have thrived in their positions, which is great considering the club is heading into another new era with Amorim in charge. A good summer will be great for the club.

Harry Amass and Patrick Dorgu should be starting in the wide positions against Bournemouth with United losing Diogo Dalot for the foreseeable future due to injury, which sees United lacking in numbers in the wide positions. Amass has done well recently and deserves more of a chance. Dorgu is still finding his feet at United.

In the centre of the midfield, Manuel Ugarte and Kobbie Mainoo should be starting together with the former one of the first names on the team sheet this season and the latter now fully fit following his injury which has kept him out for much of 2025. United will also have some good options on the bench should changes be required.

Attack: Fernandes, Hojlund, Garnacho

United’s attack needs some major attention in the summer as the club is not scoring the goals that it needs to be winning matches. Rasmus Hojlund seems to be out of his depth at the club, which is a shame, and there seems to be no coming back for him at this moment in time. I think he needs to start with no other experienced striker.

Joshua Zirkzee is out for the rest of the season, which is a shame as he was doing quite well recently. Chido Obi could be utilised as the striker at times, but he is raw and it would not be fair to but that level of expectation on the player. Bruno Fernandes and Alejandro Garnacho should be supporting the striker.

Fernandes and Garnacho have both been performing this season, which is great for the club but a striker that could find the back of the net is needed at the club. United have some creativity options, as there have ben issues this season, on the bench should changes be needed – and they will be!

Substitutes: Bayindir; Lindelof, Shaw, Fredricson; Mount, Eriksen, Casemiro, Fletcher; Obi

United will be able to name a maximum of nine players on the bench in the Premier League against Bournemouth this weekend. It is expected that Altay Bayindir will be back on the bench this weekend after he was rested last weekend for the defeat to Wolves. United will have some options though.

In defence, United should have Victor Lindelof, Luke Shaw and Tyler Fredricson on the bench which gives a good mixture of experience and youth, which is great for this stage of the season. Fredricson did well against Wolves and his participation for the remainder of the season will be great to see.

In midfield, Mason Mount, Christian Eriksen, Casemiro and Jack Fletcher could all be on the bench with gives United some firepower on the bench as the attacking line does not have many options. Chido Obi could be the only attacking player on the bench, despite being a raw talent, allowing him to cut his teeth could be good.
