Manchester United have reportedly turned down the opportunity to sign Chelsea star Ben Chilwell after he was offered to them.
United are currently dealing with a crisis at the left-back position as Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia continue with their rehabilitation from injury.
Shaw is expected to make his return to action after the September international break. There is no clear time frame as to when Malacia will come back, after missing the entirety of last season with a major physical setback.
Earlier today, The Independent’s Miguel Delaney reported that United “stepped up talks” with Chelsea over a possible deal for Chilwell, which was thought to be a completely separate transaction from a potential Jadon Sancho and Raheem Sterling swap deal.
It was stated that the two Premier League outfits were in “constant negotiation” over the past few days as United considered securing cover for the injury-prone Shaw.
Delaney has since given an update and insisted that United are no longer keen on adding Chilwell to their ranks.
He wrote on X (formerly Twitter), “United have rejected the opportunity to move for Chilwell. Sterling still being discussed.”
The Independent journalist further wrote, “Manchester United are not acting on the availability of Ben Chilwell, despite Chelsea raising the prospect of a deal in ongoing talks between the two clubs.”
“The left-back had been proposed by Chelsea due to United’s struggles in that area with Luke Shaw’s injury record, but the Old Trafford hierarchy have decided to press on with their own options. It is understood the figures involved in any prospective deal, as one factor, were way apart.”
Fabrizio Romano had his say on the matter and said that no negotiations were going on between United and Chelsea for Chilwell.
“Manchester United current stance is clear on Ben Chilwell reports: no interest, no talks ongoing.”
It’s believed that in the absence of a fit and natural left-back, Victor Lindelof – should he stay at Old Trafford beyond the summer – will be deployed on that part of the pitch.
