Manchester United are set to make Matheus Cunha their first signing of the summer transfer window with Ruben Amorim’s men tipped to activate his £62.5million release clause.

Cunha has been on United’s radar for some time after impressing at Wolves in recent seasons. A swoop in January was heavily touted but the Brazilian, instead, signed a new deal at Molineux.

Amorim is expected to drastically improve his attack next season – after an atrocious 2024/2025 campaign. Both Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee have both struggled in front of goal with Bruno Fernandes (19 goals) United’s top-scorer and Alejandro Garnacho (11 goals) behind him.

The market for attackers is expected to be as competitive as ever this summer – with teams including Arsenal, Chelsea and United all desperate for new faces. Viktor Gyokeres, Alexander Isak and Benjamin Sesko are all big names being linked with huge moves this summer, but Amorim has moved quickly to land Cunha.

Cunha’s imminent arrival, with personal terms not thought to be a problem, will hand United an early advantage in their transfer business for next season. The Manchester Evening News understands that United want up to four key signings with a centre-forward-like addition expected to follow.

United received criticism for not pursuing a transfer for Cunha in January when it appeared he might have been available. A new contract was eventually signed, and United decided against the loan arrival of Mathys Tel, who joined Europa League final opponents Tottenham at the end of the window.

Now, their relentless attitude is ready to pay off with United sealing his signature over the likes of Arsenal before the window has even opened. It’s understood that the 25-year-old has “accepted the project” at Old Trafford with the final details expected to be ironed out.

For Wolves, they are striking up a great deal. In December 2022, Cunha joined the club on an initial loan deal from Atletico Madrid before moving permanently for around £35million.

At the time, according to transfermarkt.com, Cunha’s market value was just £21million – 90 games, 33 goals and 15 assists later, his market value has done nothing but rise in two years. At the end of his first full season at Molineux (23/24), he was worth £37.8million.

Now, his market value sits at £46.3million, seeing a £25.3million increase from when he first touched down in the UK. However, it is under £20million less than the figure United are expected to pay for his services, but that figure still demonstrates how much his stock has gone up since moving to the Premier League.
