Manchester United missed out on securing an additional £10.95million windfall after being beaten 1-0 by Tottenham Hotspur in Wednesday night’s Europa League final in Bilbao.

Brennan Johnson netted the only goal of the game at the San Mames Stadium, stabbing the ball home from close range just before the half-time interval.

He capitalised inside the box after the ball bounced off Luke Shaw and headed towards the bottom corner.

As well as missing out on a first European trophy since 2017, United have also missed out on Champions League qualification for next season, meaning they will not participate in any European competition in 2025/26.

United last went a season without playing in Europe in 2014/15.

As a result of losing to Ange Postecoglou’s side, United have missed out on the £10.95m prize money they would have secured for simply winning the Europa League.

Instead, as runners-up, they have banked £5.9m. United had already earned £26.6m from their Europa League campaign prior to reaching the final.

Additionally, United have missed out on just short of £16m for failing to get into the Champions League.

Qualification for the league phase is worth £15.7m, with every point earned securing additional financial rewards.
