Alan Shearer and Gary Neville have agreed over concerns surrounding Manchester United as the club endure a poor start to the season under Ruben Amorim after finishing 15th last term
Alan Shearer has agreed with Gary Neville over concerns around Ruben Amorim‘s management at Manchester United.
The Red Devils suffered a 3-1 defeat at Brentford on Saturday afternoon, with Igor Thiago scoring twice and Mathias Jensen adding a late goal to seal all three points for the home side. Benjamin Sesko scored his first goal for United in the opening 45 minutes, but it did little to change the final result.
United were left to rue missed chances after Bruno Fernandes failed to convert a penalty while alarming defensive errors were made in west London. The loss leaves Amorim’s team struggling in 14th place in the Premier League table, having only managed to collect seven points from their opening six matches. They have also only managed to score seven goals so far.
And former Newcastle striker Shearer has shared his ‘alarm’ at Amorim’s tactics during United’s defeat to the Bees – questioning the approach at the Gtech Community Stadium.
“It was alarming what he was doing, the players he was moving around,” he told the Rest is Football.
“Moving the right centre-back into [central] centre-back, Mbeumo was right wing-back then Mason Mount was in the 10 for four minutes then Zirkzee come on and moved Mount to left wing-back.
“It was confusing dot com. It was like goodness me what is happening? It’s incredible.”
Shearer’s comments echo those of ex-United captain Neville, as Amorim faces mounting pressure despite continued backing from Old Trafford chiefs.
“I am very worried, there is no point in me sitting here and saying I’m not,” Neville told NBC on Sunday. “The levels of performance, the results and the substitutions yesterday. I saw something at the end of the Grimsby game that they lost in the Carabao Cup a couple of weeks ago which was Mason Mount ending up at left wing-back.
“We admire managers who are stubborn and resilient around their system, we want them to stick to their plan, but when you have Mason Mount playing at left-back you are going to look pretty stupid.
“It has happened twice now and it can’t happen. The first time I thought it was unforgivable and yesterday it happened again.
“He changes his back three and his back five every single game and the performances and the results are just unacceptable.
“I’m really, really worried. I would never go on television as I know how difficult a manager’s job can be and say a manager should be sacked, but I suspect the hierarchy at Manchester United are going to want to see a turnaround.”
