Andre Onana sweating on Manchester United place vs Arsenal

Andre Onana did not play at all during pre-season but he has recovered from a hamstring injury in time for the start of the new campaign.

Bayindir or Onana will start against Arsenal

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has refused to confirm who will start in goal for their opening Premier League fixture against Arsenal.

Andre Onana has recovered from a hamstring injury after missing the entirety of United’s pre-season schedule. Altay Bayindir started in four of United’s five friendlies amid Onana’s absence.

United have explored the possibility of recruiting a new goalkeeper this summer and attempted to sign Emiliano Martinez on loan from Aston Villa. The club will not pursue a move for Gianluigi Donnarumma.

The MEN revealed in May that a new goalkeeper was not considered a priority by United, who could still reinforce their midfield before the transfer window closes.

“It’s like the other players,” Amorim said when asked if Onana would start against Arsenal. “Everyone has to win the place. So I’m not going to say if one player is number one. He’s ready to go to the game. Let’s wait. You will know Sunday.”

United signed Onana from Inter Milan for £47.2million in July 2023 but he has endured two error-strewn seasons. The 29-year-old was withdrawn from the squad at Newcastle United in April after he made two mistakes in the Europa League quarter-final first leg draw with Lyon.

Bayindir has seldom convinced across his ten starts for United but he did help them beat Arsenal in the FA Cup third round last season, saving penalties in regulation time and the shootout.

Amorim is nevertheless confident that Onana – and his teammates – will improve on last season. “I think we can – me as a coach, our players that were here last year – we can do better. So I have full confidence on that.”

Last season, Amorim confirmed Bayindir would start at Arsenal in the FA Cup and that Onana would come back into the team for the second leg against Lyon.
