AS Roma director Frederic Massara has confirmed where his side stands on a potential late swoop for Manchester United forward Jadon Sancho.
Sancho turned down Roma
Sancho’s future remains as uncertain as ever with just over a week left until the close of the summer transfer window.
Since Chelsea opted out of their loan obligation to sign him permanently at the end of last season, Sancho has been on the market and available for transfer but he has yet to land a new club.
There has been some interest in the 25-year-old, but his unwillingness to take a pay cut has put off most of his suitors. However, it did not deter Roma as they went on to lodge a bid for him earlier this month.
It’s understood that the Serie A side offered United a £20m sum – a proposal the Red Devils were prepared to accept in their desperation to rid themselves of Sancho.
However, Sancho rejected the terms Roma put on the table and it’s believed he is not keen on a switch to Stadio Olimpico.
A report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that Roma had not completely given up on the England international and were set to launch a fresh attempt to lure him to their ranks.
However, it appears they did not receive encouragement from Sancho’s camp, with a subsequent report claiming that Roma have sicne turned their attention towards an alternative target – Eljif Elmas of RB Leipzig.
Now, Roma chief Frederic Massara has confirmed that they’ve moved on from Sancho as the player lacks the “motivation” to play for the Giallorossi.
Roma director’s comments on Sancho
Massara said [as quoted by SportMediaset], “Sancho is a strong player, who was linked with all the Italian clubs.”
“At the moment, it is only a suggestion, because it doesn’t seem as if there are the right conditions and above all, the motivation to carry on these negotiations.”
Having also rebuffed an offer from Turkish Super Lig outfit Besiktas, Sancho’s options are dwindling fast and there is a serious risk that United could end up being stuck with him.
Meanwhile, the Red Devils are back in action on Sunday when they face Fulham at Craven Cottage. Kick-off is at 16:30 BST.
