Marcus Rashford joined Barcelona on a season-long loan from Manchester United in the summer, with the La Liga giants holding an option to sign him permanently at the end of the season
Barcelona sporting director Deco has claimed that the club has no plans to bring in new players this January, hinting that all their 2026 dealings will be conducted next summer. This year, Barca only added three players to their first team squad, including Marcus Rashford.
The La Liga champions secured Rashford, 28, on a season-long loan from Manchester United. As part of the deal, Barcelona negotiated an option to permanently sign him at the end of this season for €30million (£26m).
So far, the England international has impressed the Barca hierarchy, scoring six goals and providing five assists in 15 appearances, primarily from the left wing.
However, due to their current financial situation, the Catalan giants plan to wait until the end of the season before making any decisions. Hence, Deco has no plans for the January transfer window.
At an event on Friday, during Barcelona’s open training session at the still-under-construction but newly renovated Camp Nou, Deco stated: “If we are doing well and there are no surprises, I don’t think it’s necessary.
“We know exactly where we can improve and the difficulties we face. Last season, we also went through some difficult moments and we were able to overcome them,” added Deco, with Hansi Flick’s side having won just three of their last seven games since the start of October.
“When we lower the intensity, we suffer. We need to have the best players. There are no excuses, but when you can’t make changes because of injuries and they affect our midfield. There are things to improve even when we win.”
Flick believes that Rashford has more to offer to help Barca find their rhythm this season, with the United loanee having found the back of the net in their 3-1 victory over Elche at home last weekend. “When you see the chances he has, one or two goals more will be good, also for him,” he said.
“But we can be happy with him, of course. I am very happy with him. He can play on this level, and I am happy he shows it, for the fans and for the club, and also for the teammates he is a very important player.”
Rashford will be aiming to increase his goal count when Barca face Celta Vigo on Sunday. The 28-year-old has previously scored at Celta’s ground, the Estadio de Balaidos, netting a stunning free-kick to secure United a 1-0 triumph in their Europa League semi-final first leg in 2017.
Speaking last month, Rashford, who has two-and-a-half years left on his United contract, confirmed he would like to remain at Barcelona beyond the end of his loan spell.
“Oh yeah, for sure,” Rashford told ESPN when asked if he wanted to stay at Barcelona. “I’m enjoying this football club, and I think for anybody who loves football, Barcelona is one of the key clubs in the history of the game. For a player it is an honour.”
