Bayern Munich midfielder Leon Goretzka has made it clear he intends to stay at the club, while addressing rumours of a potential move to Manchester United.
United are aiming for a squad overhaul this summer as they try to reshape the squad to suit Ruben Amorim and his football philosophy.
So far, United’s primary focus has been on bolstering the attacking department after a goal-shy 2024/25 campaign. The Red Devils have already announced the arrival of Matheus Cunha from Wolverhampton Wanderers while a deal for Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo is believed to be close to completion.
United are also in the market for a striker, with the likes of Viktor Gyokeres (Sporting CP), Victor Osimhen (Napoli), Benjamin Sesko (RB Leipzig) and Jean-Philippe Mateta (Crystal Palace), among the players mentioned to be on the club’s radar.
But, United’s ambitions don’t end there and there have been suggestions that a midfield signing is also on the cards, although this is likely dependent on player sales.
Christian Eriksen is expected to officially leave the club at the end of the month when his contract expires, while Casemiro has once again attracted interest from the Saudi Pro League.
United already had a pressing need for midfield reinforcements even with Eriksen and Casemiro still on the books, but that urgency will only intensify if both players depart.
According to German journalist Christian Falk, there have been “rumours” that United are eyeing Goretzka.
Goretzka has been linked to United at various stages of his career over the years but needless to say, a transfer has never materialised.
At the start of Vincent Kompany’s reign at Bayern, it seemed Goretzka’s time at the club was coming to an end, with limited minutes on the pitch. However, he has since regained the manager’s confidence and is now featuring more regularly. He made 40 appearances last term across all competitions.
On Monday, Falk spoke to the 30-year-old and directly asked him about rumours that United want him.
He answered, “I’m very focused on the tournament [Club World Cup] here and am happy to be at Bayern.”
“I want to help the team next season as well.”
Goretzka’s comments make it clear he isn’t considering a move to Old Trafford. Likewise, there’s been little to suggest United are seriously pursuing him, with other midfield targets currently taking priority.
