Evanilson red card appeal decision made after VAR controversy vs Manchester United

Bournemouth have lodged an official appeal against the decision to show Evanilson a straight red card in Sunday afternoon’s 1-1 draw against Manchester United.

Evanilson was sent off in the 68th minute at the Vitality Stadium following a late challenge on Noussair Mazraoui. The Brazilian appeared to slip on the surface before catching Mazraoui on the bottom of his foot.

On-field referee Peter Bankes gave Evanilson a yellow card, but was then advised to go and have another look at the incident on his pitch-side monitor. And after a quick check, Banks overturned his initial decision, and opted to send the former Porto man off, much to the frustration of the Bournemouth players, staff and fans.

Andoni Iraola fumed at the decision in his post-match interview – claiming that Bankes made the wrong call and Evanilson should not have been handed a straight red card. Iraola said: “No, it’s not very harsh, it’s common sense.

“He slips, everybody sees that he slips. And even if you consider, no – it doesn’t matter he has slips – because he doesn’t catch him with the leg that goes high.

“He catches him with the leg that goes down on the floor and he referees, the referee referees the play. And the VAR supposedly has to be something super clear, super obvious. The VAR is the one who decides.

“And after, I want to see the process, how the process has gone. If they have shown him a still image, they have shown him all the play in real speed, the reason why he slips and that is the situation.

“It’s difficult, very difficult to accept.”

Now, Sky Sports are reporting that Bournemouth have chosen to lodge an official appeal to the Premier League regarding Evanilson’s red card and the subsequent three-match ban.

The 24-year-old is set to miss matches against Arsenal, Aston Villa and Manchester City, but the Cherries feel as though the suspension and red card should be rescinded.

Meanwhile, former Premier League Dermot Gallagher has delivered his verdict on Evanilson’s red card, as he told Ref Watch: “Interestingly he slips on this one but he’s low, he does get the ball first.

“He does [have both feet off the ground], but he’s not airborne when he gets there. His feet are off the ground for a slight period of time, which most players are, but he’s low, slips and he also does get the ball. I think it’s just about a yellow card and I say just about a yellow because any higher and then it’s a red.”

Evanilson’s red card helped swing the pendulum in United’s favour as Amorim’s team secured a dramatic late point. After Antoine Semenyo had given Bournemouth the lead, Rasmus Hojlund equalised in the 96th minute, poking him from close-range.
