If United seek a direct, high-impact replacement for Casemiro’s defensive output and goal threat, Guimaraes is the clear choice. The 28-year-old Brazilian is enjoying his most productive Premier League season, registering nine goals and four assists despite missing eight matches through injury.
Guimaraes excels at physically imposing himself in duels, and his knack for late runs into the box provides a valuable secondary scoring threat.
While Guimaraes is the better ‘destroyer’, Sandro Tonali is the superior ‘architect’.
Under Carrick, United have transitioned into a side that prioritises ball retention and tempo control—areas in which Tonali excels.
Unlike Guimaraes, who occasionally gravitates towards the ball and leaves gaps behind him, Tonali is a positional specialist. He records significantly more interceptions than the Brazilian, suggesting he reads the game with a composure that mirrors Carrick’s own playing style. At 25, he also offers a longer-term investment.
