“I didn’t expect that”: United star amazed by new summer recruit’s game-changing trait

Matthijs de Ligt believes his best football is still ahead of him as he prepares for his second campaign at Manchester United.

The Dutch centre back made 42 appearances in his debut season after joining from Bayern Munich in August 2024.

A strong spell in March and April saw him win plaudits from supporters before injury curtailed his momentum late in the campaign.

Now fully fit, De Ligt is determined to build on that foundation.

Speaking to United Review during the club’s USA tour, he said: “I feel there’s still a lot more to come.”

The 25-year-old noted that, while he has been playing at the top level for years, he is still relatively young for his position.

“As a centre-back you’re normally in your prime at 28 or 29, so in that way, I’m still quite young,” he added.

Positive first impressions from new signings

The defender also gave his assessment of United’s summer arrivals. Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha and Diego Leon have all linked up with the squad on tour.

“I think they’ve made a really good impression,” De Ligt said. “Bryan has only been here a few days but has already scored some goals in training. Matheus has been here two weeks, training really well and fitting in with the group.”

“I think Matheus is a really technical player, with Brazilian flair, really good with the ball and really fast,” he said. “I didn’t expect that. He scores goals and gives assists, so a really good addition.”

On Leon, he added: “He is really strong and physical. He comes from a different system, so tactically there’s a bit to learn, but he has all the attributes to be a very good player.”

With fresh renewed personal ambition, De Ligt is eager to help United push forward in the new season.
