Jamie Carragher has dismissed a fan’s assertion that Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton is worth £100million, stating unequivocally “no one’s paying that” in the Premier League. Despite sustaining a groin injury that sidelined him for three months, Wharton’s performances in midfield have played a pivotal role in propelling Palace to their first-ever FA Cup victory.
Upon recovery, Wharton immediately reclaimed his spot in the starting line-up and has been a consistent fixture on the team sheet.
The 21-year-old midfielder earned his first England cap after Gareth Southgate called him up for Euro 2024 last summer.
Wharton’s stellar performance this season has sparked rumours of a move to one of the top Premier League clubs, with Manchester United one of the teams linked with an interest in the midfielder. Man City are also said to have the England man as a long-term target.
The talk surrounding his future prompted a supporter during The Overlap Fan Debate to suggest that Wharton is worth a fee of £100 million.
Carragher, alongside co-host Paul Scholes, was taken aback, sharply responding: “£100m? No one’s paying £100m for Adam Wharton. I like Adam Wharton. Anyone who pays £100m for him you’re mad. £100m?! Oh my god. £100m for Adam Wharton? You wouldn’t buy him for £100m don’t be daft,” he said, as per the Mirror.
Scholes shared in the surprise at the fan’s valuation, humorously questioning: “£100m? Is that with his wages for 20 years or…? He’s a good player but not £100m.”
The banter left the supporter clearly amused as they were teased by the Liverpool legend, prompting laughter from the rest of the fans present in the studio.
Although Carragher does not seem to have the utmost admiration for Wharton, the player is highly regarded by Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola, who has complimented him on several occasions.
Prior to City’s 5-2 victory over Palace in April, the Spaniard stated: “He’s an excellent holding midfielder. His impact has been really good coming from the Championship to the Premier League. Really good left foot. Really good player.”
Wharton was substituted during that heavy loss, but he was one of the standout players on the pitch as Palace beat City in their historic 1-0 win at Wembley to claim the FA Cup.
