JJ Gabriel’s vindicated Man United decision, Marcus Rashford prediction, first team plan

JJ Gabriel will take a leading role at the Joie Stadium on Thursday as Manchester United face off against Manchester City in the FA Youth Cup final

The stars of tomorrow will line up at the Joie Stadium on Thursday when Manchester United and Manchester City square off. The top two teams in the under-18 Premier League will collide in the FA Youth Cup final, with JJ Gabriel expected to play a big role for United.

The 15-year-old has lit up their youth teams this season and boasts 26 goals in 28 games across the U18 Premier League and FA Youth Cup. That includes scoring United’s first goal in their 2-1 extra-time win over Crystal Palace in the semi-finals.

The sky is the limit for the most promising prospect currently residing in United’s ranks. And all signs suggest one of the most in-demand youngsters in England is thriving as he builds toward a potential first-team bow for United next season.

Vindicated move north

Having been born in Enfield, Gabriel was more likely to turn out for the likes of Arsenal or Tottenham than United on paper. However, the club’s scouts can be proud of their work in successfully tempting him away from the capital.

And Gabriel’s father, former Republic of Ireland international Joe O’Cearuill, has more reason than most to be proud. He doesn’t disguise the fact, either, having taken to social media in the past to express his delight at the choice to move north in 2022.

“I remember in London when JJ was eight years old,” he previously wrote in a since deleted post on X. “They used to say he [was] just a YouTuber and will never make it, just a showboat, he will be done at 11 years old.

“So glad we moved to Manchester. The club showed him love and let him grow into himself, not a robot.”

It’s paying dividends thus far, with Gabriel looking to cement his rise by clinching the FA Youth Cup. And he’s even earned the attention of certain first-team members at Old Trafford already.

Rashford prediction

While he may not be at the club at present, Marcus Rashford has already given Gabriel his dues this season. Even from Barcelona, the former Old Trafford talisman has been keeping tabs on a starlet occupying a very similar space to the one he once emerged from.

Rashford, 28, celebrated winning La Liga with Barca on Sunday following a 2-0 win over Real Madrid in El Clasico. And the England international played a starring role after converting a sensational free-kick at the Camp Nou.

A sea of stars from Rashford’s past and present rolled in on Instagram to congratulate him on his achievement. Gabriel was among them after commenting simply “Top” on a celebratory post.

And Rashford saw his successor in the comments section as he replied: “Next up.” That tribute clearly being a nod to the fact Gabriel is next in line to follow his same path from Carrington’s academy and into the first team.

It’s not the first time Rashford has put the up-and-comer on a pedestal, either, after previously bigging up United’s next big thing. The senior star commented on one of Gabriel’s Instagram posts in March and revealed just what he thinks of the forward, writing: “Lil bro is a star.”

Sky has upgraded its Ultimate TV and Sky Sports bundle to now include HBO Max, Netflix, Disney+, discovery+ and Hayu, as well as 135 channels and full Sky coverage of the Premier League and EFL.

First team plan

There’s every bit of evidence to suggest United will indeed introduce Gabriel into their first-team ranks next season. The club might have done so already were it not for the fact Premier League laws prevented him from participating this term because he’s too young.

The MEN reported in December how United were doing all they could to give Gabriel a clear pathway to the first team. This includes training sessions with the senior squad, not to mention he’s already being lined up to take part in this summer’s pre-season tour of Europe.

Barcelona have shown an interest in the teen and have already given Gabriel a tour of their facilities in a bid to tempt him. However, those efforts have thus far proved futile.

“Like everyone, I know he is a really talented guy and everyone paid attention on social media,” said Ruben Amorim of the youngster when he was still at the helm in late 2025. “You could see the U21s had a game and we had less players and tried to pick players for training that have talent.

“Not just for me to see for tomorrow but for them to feel what it means to be in the first team, the difficulties playing against our defenders, the difficulty of our training, the pace. If we can use every training we have to show the kids what they need to do to be here, it is important, not just for JJ but for everyone.”

Incumbent Michael Carrick has also stepped up and taken notice of the player and said in March: “He’s doing really well, JJ. We’re always trying to give that exposure to players, for them to come and train and feel it.

“JJ is a big talent. It’s pretty obvious to know that and he’s had a really good season for the under-18s. We obviously think an awful lot of him. But patience is important in managing everything that comes with that.

“It is about picking the right moment to step up, picking the moment to leave them in a certain place. What he’s done when he’s trained, he’s done well as you’d expect.”
