Manchester United are pushing to sell both Alejandro Garnacho and Rasmus Hojlund before the transfer window shuts, with neither in Ruben Amorim’s plans for the 2025/26 season at Old Trafford
Bruno Fernandes wished for Alejandro Garnacho and Rasmus Hojlund to step up and become Manchester United’s best players over the new season.
However, the duo look to be well on their way to forgetting that dream, as Ruben Amorim pushes to sell more players before the transfer window shuts. Hojlund was omitted from United’s matchday squad that lost 1-0 to Arsenal on Sunday amid interest from AC Milan, among others.
Meanwhile, Garnacho fell out of favour with the Portuguese boss long before pre-season began, after criticising Amorim’s substitutions during their Europa League final defeat against Tottenham Hotspur.
Hojlund has trained with the squad and took part in the preparations for the 2025/26 Premier League campaign – but with Benjamin Sesko now in the building, the Danish striker could have graced Old Trafford for the final time.
These revelations will disappoint club captain Fernandes, who opened up about his desire not to win the Player of the Season award in May and instead hand it over to one of his younger team-mates.
Speaking to CBS back in May, the 30-year-old said: “The main thing I want… and I was even joking with Josh [Zirkzee] the other day, we were talking about the awards and they were saying like, ‘Oh, who’s gonna win the award of Player of the Season?’ They were kind of putting a joke.

“I said that I hope next year I am not even involved in the name – and do the same season as I did this year, and not be involved in the name of winning that trophy.
“Because that will mean you step up, Amad will step up, Garnacho will step up, Rasmus will step up… if they start scoring goals, start doing assists, start running backwards and tackling, they will be the ones having attention and not me, and I will be the most happy person in the world.
“I’m there to help my team-mates get the best out of them, and that’s all I want to do because I know as soon as I can get the best out of them, my team will be much better.”
Despite this wish from the Portuguese playmaker, Hojlund and Garnacho each have one foot out of the door at Old Trafford, it seems. AC Milan’s sporting director, Igli Tare, recently noted that the 22-year-old striker is a viable option for the Italian giants – but not their only one.

He said: “Hojlund is a good option for us. We are thinking about him, but in the transfer market, you never know what could happen.” Milan may reportedly drop their interest in the United man if they can secure Dusan Vlahovic from Juventus instead.
United value Hojlund at a reasonable £30million – a far cry from his £72m deal they struck with Serie A side Atalanta two summers ago.
Meanwhile, Fabrizio Romano reports that Chelsea are now in advanced talks with United over the signing of Garnacho. The report claims the Blues hierarchy have an excellent relationship with United’s chief executive officer, Omar Berrada.

The 21-year-old winger, who only wants to join the FIFA Club World Cup champions, recently turned down an approach from Bayern Munich. The Red Devils have priced Garnacho at £50m, but Chelsea are only prepared to pay about £30m as things stand.
Garnacho and Hojlund join Tyrell Malacia and Jadon Sancho as the four-strong squad that are on their way out of the club, with Roma, Besiktas and Atalanta all considering moves for the latter pair.
