Manchester United are understood to not be interested in pursuing further punishment against League Two Grimsby Town after they were fined for fielding an ineligible player in the Carabao Cup second round defeat last week.

Questions surrounding the potential replay of the fixture were asked when it was reported on Tuesday that Grimsby substitute Clarke Oduor had missed the deadline to be registered for the game by one minute. The midfielder arrived on loan from Bradford City on August 26, the day before the fixture.

Grimsby registered him at 12.01pm which meant he should not have been eligible to face Ruben Amorim’s side. However, he was named on the bench, came on in the second half and missed a penalty in the shootout.

It is understood that the Mariners self-reported the infraction and the EFL announced that they would be fined £20,000 for the incident. In a statement, the EFL explained: “Following a comprehensive review of all the evidence and considering prior decisions taken in respect of offences in the League Cup, the Board determined that the issuing of a fine followed precedent.”

Previously, teams in the FA Cup have been booted out for fielding ineligible players. Greater Manchester non-league club Droylsden were ejected from the tournament in 2008 allowing Chesterfield to advance while more recently in 2023, Barnsley suffered the same fate which allowed Horsham to progress.

Sky has slashed the price of its Essential TV and Sky Sports bundle for the 2025/26 season, saving members £336 and offering more than 1,400 live matches across the Premier League, EFL and more.

Sky will show at least 215 live Premier League games this season, an increase of up to 100 more.

The rules regarding the fielding of ineligible players differ between the FA Cup and Carabao Cup. According to BBC Sport journalist Simon Stone, United are not looking to push the EFL to reverse their decision and the result from last week still stands.

As such, it will be Grimsby who shall take on Championship strugglers Sheffield Wednesday later this month. As for United, they will be focusing on the Premier League for the foreseeable with the FA Cup starting for them at the third round stage in January.
