Antoine Semenyo has a £65million release clause in his Bournemouth contract, which may reignite Manchester United’s interest in the star.
Despite speculation linking the 25-year-old with a move to Old Trafford this summer, Semenyo decided to commit his future to the Cherries. However, regardless of signing a five-year extension, which should keep him at the Vitality Stadium until 2030, the star may find himself on the move as soon as January, thanks to a new revelation.
According to The Athletic, the Ghanaian’s latest contract contains a £65m release clause, which any club can activate. It’s understood that Bournemouth have reluctantly ‘accepted’ that his destiny is beyond their control, and a January departure could be on the cards.
The report additionally reveals how Semenyo was priced at approximately £70m this summer, with his release clause enabling interested clubs to acquire his services for slightly less come January. It is also suggested that United – or any other potential buyers for that matter – have a deadline to trigger his clause, which would allow the Cherries to locate a replacement.
It follows Semenyo recently rejecting suggestions that he was eager to leave his present club. When questioned by Jamie Redknapp about his future recently, the forward replied: “I don’t think about it too much.
“I try to stay present as much as I can. You see the news all the time, I see it as well, I’m not oblivious, but I try to keep focused. I’m enjoying my football here. If I’m not scoring goals, all of that goes away. I try to stay present, do the best I can for the team, score goals and whatever happens in the future happens.
“When they [his former team-mates] all left [in the summer], there was a lot of interest and back and forth with the club. But I knew in my head that the manager’s got something up his sleeve this year.
“How we finished off the season last year was so good and we could continue, especially with the players we’ve bought in as well. I wasn’t too sure at the start but we’ve kicked on like a house on fire. I’m glad I committed to staying here because I’m enjoying every moment,” reports the Mirror.
Following an eye-catching return of 13 goals in all competitions last season, Semenyo became the subject of transfer talk linking him with moves to United, Liverpool and Tottenham, among others. Ultimately, United secured the signatures of Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko, whereas Liverpool brought in the likes of Florian Wirtz, Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike.
Spurs meanwhile completed a £55m deal for Mohammed Kudus from West Ham United. Nevertheless, having already netted six Premier League goals so far this season, the sensation could find himself back on the radar of those clubs when the January transfer window opens.
Manchester United are beginning to find their form under the guidance of Ruben Amorim, but doubts persist over the suitability of Sesko as their main striker, given his youth and lack of experience at the highest level.
United have also been linked with several other forwards ahead of the January window, including Karim Adeyemi and Real Madrid’s Endrick.
