Man United latest: Bruno Fernandes ‘dream’ emerges as star ‘willing to take paycut’ for move

Manchester United face a busy summer as they ready some ins and outs ahead of a Champions League return

Manchester United should find themselves in a strong negotiating position in the transfer market following their return to the Champions League. They are guaranteed a top-five finish after beating Liverpool on Sunday and now the important recruitment work can begin in earnest while work continues to keep key members of the current squad.

A busier schedule will likely necessitate a larger squad, and that’s before accounting for those who are set to depart. The club stands to make significant savings on their wage bill when Casemiro and Jadon Sancho leave upon the expiry of their contracts, while others could also be on the way out.

United have previously had to battle to retain captain Bruno Fernandes and may be in good shape to convince him to stay despite renewed transfer attention. With the World Cup kicking off on 11 June, some of the summer business may need to wait but there are some things which can be taken care of early.

One of these is the appointment of a permanent manager may well take precedence, with decision-makers yet to determine whether they continue with interim boss Michael Carrick or pursue someone with greater top-flight experience. Either way, the higher-ups will be on the lookout for players who can benefit whoever ends up in the dugout.

The future of captain Fernandes is amongst today’s key talking points, alongside speculation surrounding Casemiro’s next move. Here are our latest headlines from around Old Trafford.

Galatasaray pessimistic over Fernandes

United skipper Fernandes remains a prime target for Galatasaray, according to Sky Sport Deutschland. However, the Turkish club are said to be pessimistic about their prospects now that United have secured Champions League football.

Gala, who claimed the Turkish Super Lig title last season, sit four points ahead of nearest rivals Fenerbahce with two fixtures remaining this campaign. Reports suggest they are targeting both a new No.10 and a more defensive-minded midfielder, with the interest in Fernandes more in hope than expectation.

The Istanbul outfit have shown no hesitation in spending big in recent transfer windows, securing the signatures of the likes of Victor Osimhen and Leroy Sane to keep themselves competitive in the Champions League. They have explored a move for Fernandes in the past but are reported to recognise United’s European qualification will make things difficult for them.

Casemiro willing to compromise

We have long known that Casemiro won’t be at United next season, despite an impressive second half of the campaign. The Brazilian has not yet settled on his next destination, though there has been talk of interest from the United States and Saudi Arabia.

Inter Miami are amongst the clubs in the mix and Sky Sports reports that the midfielder would be willing to accept a substantial reduction in his salary to join the club. As well as favouring Florida as a home for his family, he is said to be keen to link up with Argentina icon Lionel Messi after years spent on opposing sides of the Clasico divide.

Barcelona legend Messi and former Real Madrid star Casemiro have met 20 times for club and country, with each emerging victorious on eight occasions. Inter Miami are searching for a new defensive midfielder following the retirement of Sergio Busquets, though rivals LA Galaxy have also been mentioned as potential suitors.
